Come to think of it - yes - you do see many things break right in the corner. Guess this may be an extremely common error.

Makes sense - figured as much - with this design though - wonder if they had to make more dies than normal?

    Thanks for the explanation.

Yes - it shows up well when you find one. Going to be looking at a couple more rolls tomorrow. Should be neat to see what I find.

Actually nowadays they do try to catch and retire dies shortly after they atart cracking. Once cracks start the die probably won't last much longer relatively speaking and they don't want coins from badly cracked or brken dies being issued

As the press runs the coins it spits out are caught in a holding bin and the operator examines a few every few minutes to make sure there are no problems. If they are Ok, the holding bin is dumped into the transport bin and the holding bin starts over. If a problem is found the prss is shut down and the problem corected. If it is a minor problem they may go ahead and release the coins in the holding bin, if not they scrap them.

Average life for a quarter die is in the neighborhood of a half million coins. Now I don't have the mintage of the Idaho quarter but guessing it to be in the range of 250 to 300 million that would mean between 500 and 600 Idaho dies.

    WOW - thanks Conder101 - only 597 die cracks to go :).

I guess I start the D series after that?

    Die Crack #4

Okay - so this is error #5 for the philly mint (4 die cracks and one die chip). This came today as part of the gold plated coin set my wife bought for me before I really started collecting. Not a big fan of these but the kids will get them down the road anyways so what does it matter.

At this rate I will have a error for every Idaho Die from the Philly mint before I complete any of my normal sets...
