Hi! Here is my 1902 red Indian Head Cent. My "Coin Snap" AI app says the grade is MS-63. I use the app to get me in the ballpark, and it seems to work most of the time, but this time, MS-63 seems a bit generous. I was thinking AU-55 to maybe MS-60. I don't think it would get "details" as it does have a bit of a cartwheel effect, but I am still learning, so that's why I posted it here. What do you think the grade would be and would it be graded "details?" If "details," please share with me what you're seeing. Thanks!!
I’d give it an AU-58. On the reverse there is west on the left side of the wreath but not on the right side. It’s a very noticeable difference.
I'm at AU also but not sure of the number. Flat headband on tips and some other high spots on Obverse. Reverse, some flatness but well struck and the entire coin shows AU features.
I think the flatness is a result of an older die and weaker strike. I'd give the coin an MS63 RB grade. Of course pictures aren't as good as coin in hand.
Here's a 1909 Indian Cent which PCGS graded MS-64 R&B. The dealer from whom I purchased this piece and I could not figure out why it's called "red." This coin is a full Unc, no question. It's hard to grade coins like this strictly from photos.
Your coin is the definition of "red", which is mint-fresh color. It is the opposite of brown, which is what all pennies age to be. Beautiful coin!
Thank you @Collecting Nut @SensibleSal66 @wxcoin @johnmilton @Bill in Burl @KBBPLL . I appreciate the good discussion and guidance!
The OP coin is a little too yellow to be original, but I can’t say that for sure. You have to see these coins live, and even then, it’s not easy to determine if it’s original.
