Hi- found this 1802 Large Cent buried in my collection. Is this a S-237 variety?

    Any thoughts on grade/value?

I don't know about the variety, but I do like the coin.

I’m not a variety collector so I don’t know. I can tell you that yours is the 1/100 variety. That's the better one.

Nice chocolate look. F/VF? For the 1/100th it's almost $500 in F. (USA Coin Book) IDK if it would grade VF 20 (I am around 12-15) but in VF 20 UCB has it at $850.

“S-237” refers to the die variety Sheldon 237. It is rated as an R-2, which is fairly common. Dies were hand made during this period. Each one was a little different.

The coin has VF-30 sharpness, VF-20 using EAC standards, but there is corrosion in Ms. Liberty’s hair. That would net it down to Find money. An expert might be able to improve it, but be careful. They could screw if up too. I am not one of those experts.

Nice coin. Looks to have vf sharpness with just a bit of corrosion in the hairlike johnmilton noted. I do believe it is a S-237. Full retail price on numismedia would be around $400 with a net grade of Fine.

Nice coin! I agree with the gentlemen above.
Leave it be or conserve, that is the question. If it was a Metal detecting find, I'd say conserve but not in this case because it clearly isn't. :)

There is some green goo on the forehead hair, and bun hair.
    Acetone?

Nah. Probably just lighten it up some. It's Verdigris or patina, no? I'm sure there are products out there but not sure what would be safe. Remember, it's a rather expensive coin.

Acetone won't damage the metal on the coin or change the color.
I wasn't sure if it was verdegris, when I said goo, that is what I meant
and acetone will remove organic material while leaving the coin intact,
or do nothing. I know you meant "lighten the green area". But I doubt that would happen. If the goo is some kind of glue or tar or residue it could come off.
