Usually you have to see a date, but if there is only 1 date for this, then they know what it is. It would only rate P-01 if it was determined that it got this way through wear, and nothing artificial. If that break between 12 and 1 o'clock on the rim is determined to be details, a Details P-01 is not going to be good. Let's say this coin arrived at this condition due to "wear"/ as it only circulated a little. How long do you have to keep it in your pocket to get it to look like this? 125 years? I think it is lower than P-01. I make it VP- 0.05.
I personally would not send it in; you would be disappointed. My opinion only. Good luck with your decision.
Some people like collecting P-01s for some reason. I'd be curious if it would get that grade, but that's me saying it because I wouldn't have to pay for the grading lol. So would it straight grade? If it doesn't count as damaged. Maybe like 75% chance. Worth the grading fees? Probably not, unless you could find someone that wanted to pay for novelty of a graded P-01. Maybe you could. Or just hold onto it yourself. If you do decide to get it graded, let us know what happens!
I have one in a little better condition, but I think the scratch on the right side by the yoke would make it a detail coin. Oh I've been tempted .
A PO 1 sold for $204 at Stacks in 2020 and a 2 sold for $228 but that was skewed by being from the Pogue collection (many in that auction had results higher than typical). PCGS shows 7 total graded in PO 1 so it’s not rare but I would still expect a premium above the grading cost. The major issue is if this one straight graded. There are some concerning areas on the rims which worries me. If you had other coins to send in, I would probably add this in (but don’t send it on its own as that would be pricey). https://auctions.stacksbowers.com/l...ntennial-of-american-independence-poor-1-pcgs https://auctions.stacksbowers.com/l...nial-of-american-independence-fair-2-pcgs-cac
This one is for sale and it’s one of the more expensive ones on the Internet. I wouldn’t send it in for grading. There are a couple of places that I think would stop it from getting a P-01 grade.
By the pic's op provided, of coarse (pun intended) the coin would straight grade. It's worn to oblivion. It's so far gone after being in circulation (or someone's pocket) for so many years that its' innocence and blindness cease to exist. Low ball set is all that is left for this poor piece. The only way it will achieve fame is through the last ditch effort of a low ball set, and that inevitability gives some folks bragging rights. Go ahead and waste your dough.........
