Does anyone see anything right about - - THIS - - I think that the grade might be right, but I cannot even make out the date.
I love it: SEMI-GOOD CONDITION NEEDS CLEANING WILL SHIP IN PRESENT CONDITION IS CHEAPER THEN MOST!!! SOLD AS-IS and: Starting bid: US $55.00 Buy It Now price: US $70.00
What I would find real funny is if this dealer does like other dealers I have seen. The first auction has BIN really high(for a week or maybe longer). When the auctions end they drop the coin a few bucks - and relist with a new BIN. They do this several times. I watched one coin be listed for two months straight, before the seller did a true auction. Another seller actually made more than his last buy it now on one coin. OH - sometimes I watch coins I do not plan on buying just for the fun of it. Ebay can be entertaining.
My take on something like that: (Idiot walks into coin shop) Idiot: How much is this penny worth? Dealer: Oh, we usually buy them for 25 cents or so and sell them for a buck or two. Idiot: WHAT!? The pretty red book I have says they go for $70! Dealer: Well, that would be the case if it were in mint condition, but it's not. Idiot: What if I cleaned it up? Dealer: If you cleaned it, it would be worth even less. Idiot: You're just trying to scam me! Dealer: I don't even want to buy it, how could I be trying to scam you? Idiot: (Picks his nose and tries to think) Screw you! I'll just go put it on eBay. We'll see who knows what they're talking about! Dealer: Have a nice day, sir. (Idiot sits at computer looking at his auction that didn't sell wondering what went wrong. Meanwhile, picks his belly button and sniffs his finger.) D'OH!
I don't know about any other coin shops, but the one I visit the most won't pay more than melt value for any coin thats been cleaned, no matter the coin or date. I've seen Tyler's analogy play out in real life all too many times, and it's all I can do to keep from laughing. Some people can't seem to invest five minutes before trying to offer a coin for sale, or even before buying in most cases. Guy~
I think you might have nailed it here! Back in my truck stop days (when state quarters were first released) I used to hear the "this coin is worth $250" drivel all of the time. My response was usually "it's worth a quarter until you can sell it for more". They would never believe me. I think the best was when a guy told me that "Larry King" the radio guy said this coin is worth X amount of dollars. My response? I have collected for over 30 years, go to shows, read the mags etc. and have NEVER seen Larry King's name mentioned as an authority. Still, or course, they wouldn't believe it because the MEDIA said it was worth that amount. People like that are beyond cattle mentality but on the wrong side of the fence.
