True, now think about a foul tip caught by the catcher. Ew.

Happy pitchers and catchers reporting day, all.

Hmmm. I wonder how much Mark Salzberg at NGC would offer for the OP's coin? They could bring it along on the coin show circuit and give it a place of dishonor in the front of one of their display cases for the coin collecting community to admire.

I couldn't agree more, it would be in the best interest of the company to keep the OP happy, but I don't think Mr. Pelf is entitled to some huge payday.

Mark IS the Legacy Series interviewee at the ANA Orlando show coming up. Maybe some CTer with a ticket might bring the subject up.

If I won the lottery I would be the first to try to buy that beautiful coin! But it's not for sale.

I do think expecting $40k excessive, but also that PCGS could and should handle this differently than what this threads suggests. They've a damn good thing going, and along with NGC have essentially a monopoly on higher end material (regardless of value), but this doesn't mean getting lazy or slapping customers publicly is wise or acceptable. A couple of free subs isn't enough IMO, at least not anymore. If what was posted earlier in the thread is true, along with simply removing the cert, they've shown themselves to be utterly classless. The ball is in their court, but if this stands it also needs to stand as another black eye upon them.

I think this might be one of those mistakes where it's better the company doesn't offer more of their service as compensation. If it's not unreasonable to suspect that the customer may be extraordinarily upset, to the point where they'll likely never use you again, why offer your services again? It's like complaining about finding a dead roach in your food and the restaurant offers a free meal on your next visit. Uh, no! I'm never going back there!

Uhhh, how do you know they didn't already try private messaging him first???

I would be surprised if they gave him a couple grand. I think that would be too generous.

Duuude. Dead roaches man. Dead. Roaches.

What are you talking about man?

What's the deal with all this talk of PCGS being classless? What does taking down a cert have to do with being classless? So what if they also posted a letter on the forum requesting that Larry contact them. If you ask me they are trying to correct the situation as quickly as possible since the incorrect designation is of much higher value. They might look a little desparate doing it that way but not classless.

Uhhh, did you notice the highlighted "if" in the post you quoted? Also, since you read and liked the individual's response, I'm sure you noticed that they didn't address this, which would have been the logical move had they tried to message him. It's called damage control and one would think a very simple concept for a business of PCGS' stature.

PCGS is known to find reasonable ways to get coins such as this off the market in a quiet way.

PCGS screwed the pooch on this one and not the OP. Therefore it is rightly their responsibility to handle it in a professional manner. A post to a coin forum by someone who may or may not be the person mentioned in the "message" reflects very poorly upon them, as did the demand of "PCGS wants the coin back". They were paid to provide a service and utterly failed, leaving themselves in no moral position to make such demands. Have you ever heard the saying one "catches more flies with honey than vinegar"?

But that's the thing, why even mention it if you don't know if the letter is real AND you don't know if they didn't try to private message him first? You are complaining about something that has a lot of ifs. Sorry I just don't see it as big of a deal as you do. Based on your reaction one would think that some major atrocity has occured. I also don't think PCGS needs to address a question from someone who's obviously not associated with Mr. Pelf. Don't you think you've overreacted a little?

There are probably better ways for PCGS to handle it. That doesn't mean they are classless. I would say a better word to describe it is incompetent (or desparate). Not classless.

I had to look back to the original posting to reaffirm that the poster bought the coin raw on e-bay and sent it in to PCGS to be certified and they certified it at PF65RD. This removes him from any culpability of lying about it, however it doesn't mean they can't change their minds. Didn't we just go through something where a poster bought a coin in a slab that was misgraded and then tried to get the TPG to pony up what the grade was valued at? Seems like it went a few pages too.
