I recently was gifted a new wallet and in switching things over I realized that I was carrying a small numismatic collection with me in my billfold. Besides the usual ID, cash, credit cards, insurance cards, grandkid pictures I had the following: one ounce of silver as a business card, a 1/20 oz platinum Australian Koala coin, 2 goldback notes, my lucky 2 dollar bill, a star note and several better serial # notes for liar poker. Am I that unusual? So I ask you " what's in your wallet"?
I wouldn't say unusual. I would say committed to the hobby though!! I always hate when I get a new wallet for Christmas. They always come just when the old wallet is getting broken in.... But yes. Last time I did a wallet changeover my old wallet had a zippered pocket. I was cleaning it out and lo and behold there was a flip in that zippered pouch. I pulled it out and it was a 16-D Merc!!!!!!!!!! My eyes glazed over... Then I remembered.... I have a contemporary counterfeit 16-D that plugs the hole in my Merc book. A fellow wanted a high grade photo of it for a book he was doing on counterfeits and I had taken it to a photo buddy and forgot I put it in that zipper pouch. Sure made for an exciting moment though! This was the suspect and the high res photo that led to that dime being forgotten in my wallet.
Just a couple of CC, my retired military ID, medical card and some other stuff. As far as cash I use a money clip.
Right now I have a "lucky" Irish coin in a flip a man from Ireland gave me a few years ago. Apparently, it's not working as my luck has been a little thin recently. I also have several Scottish 1 pound banknotes tucked in a corner of my wallet. Can't for the life of me remember why I put them there. Can't spend them so I guess I'll just leave them there. Bruce
ID, insurance & bank cards, credit cards. Slim and light. I used to have one of those that you had to use a cherry-picker to get out of your pocket, had everything in there, then I saw the Seinfeld where George's wallet explodes and thought: "oh my god, I'm just like George!"
My current wallet pice is this Geiger 5 Gram Silver bar. It was a gift and has been in my wallet for about 2 years.
Along with the usual stuff I always carry a FRN star note. I carry it so I can show people what I would like them to be on the lookout for, and to save it for me. In the last year I have received 3 star notes.
I use a money clip also, the cash in my wallet is emergency back up cash. A $1, $5, $20, and a $100. Hopefully enough to get me out of most troubles.
Whatever you have in your wallet, you should try to find yourself a type that incorporates RFID shielding so that anyone who "accidentally" bumps into you. A quick tap is all that is needed to potentially steal your account information for those ultra-convenient tap-to-pay features most cards come standard with these days, so having a means of blocking their attempts is fairly important. Granted this is not the case in every area, but as people start to get more desperate than usual due to something like say... having their lifeline for food taken away, then they might see thievery as a more viable option and those unsuspecting passersby might not have that cross their mind. As technology advances, so does the criminal mind and how they go about their routines. As for the contents of my wallet, I've got $1, several CC's, insurance cards, driver's license, business license, store rewards cards... the usual.
Capital One.......now if ya ask me what's in my pocket, therein lies a plentitude of numismatic flora and fauna.....
Reminds me of an ongoing incident that occurred back in the day when pumping first at the gas station was a problem. People in my town would "pump and run" all the time because the "highway" was close by and they knew that they could get away.... Now, of course, you have to pay first.
Would need more info and probably a psych eval I have the normal ID's and cards. In addition a few business/appointment cards, couple hundo cash, the customary $2 bill. I try to keep the wallet thin.
I'm thinking pump and run started immediately after attendants stopped pumping your gas and self-service began. Self-service? That means help yourself! I have nothing interesting in my wallet. Cash, credit cards (one business, one personal), insurance cards, DL. I like to keep it thin so I don't end up like George Costanza.
I've long since been in the habit of keeping a half dollar in my wallet for reasons of... just because I felt like it, had a spare half dollar not needed in my collection, so why not. Which particular one has changed over time; for a long time it was a spare half dollar from the last time I got a roll worth of them. But lately I've decided I don't need a whole roll worth of half dollars to keep up with my collection, and just buy the individual issues of eBay every year to keep up with my collection. What's in my wallet now is a result of me recently buying a 1973 uncirculated set, primarily for the Eisenhower dollars in it, but as I figured no reason to let the rest go to waste, I used what was in there to upgrade my penny, nickel, dime, and half dollar collections too. So what's in my wallet is the coin I took out to replace with the upgrade, so it's a 1973 Kennedy half dollar. TLDR: 1973 Kennedy half dollar. (Plus well all the stuff anyone would have in their wallet.)
I worked for a really cool guy for 40 years. For all those years he kept a $500 and a $1000 bill in his wallet. They were a reminder of the days he had nothing to his name and working as a police officer. The day I retired, he handed me $5000 and thanked me for helping him get where he was at. One of the best men I have ever known. He gave credit to God for everything.
