I have seen 8 of these this morning - all exactly the same. Top two of the set are fine, bottom two are not. What do you think? Thanks Darryl
Thanks for the laugh. Thanks - I only received two of the errors - was wishing I had gotten all eight.
Thanks - I picked up a few more at lunch. It is been interesting to look at them as not all of the cracks are the same. Here is one that is a little more pronounced. Regards Darryl
It's called a progression, die cracks do that. I would not bother to send them off for slabbing. Even if you sent them in as moderns and not under the error coin catagory you would still pay about $15 plus shipping and insurance both ways to slab a coin worth at most $1.
Is that a second crack from the bottom of the first "U" in "UNUM" to the coin edge, that didn't appear on the first ones pictured?
Okay, one for the experts - are these two different die cracks? Notice the first one is almost parallel to the bottom of the state and the second one (like all the others I have shown) is almost a 45 degree angle to the corner of the state.
I love those cracks :hatch:Darryl, You're on a roll. Now you know these things come in 3's. Since you are diversifimg your die cracks you can always send some samples to me. I love cracks. Really. Bruce
Thank you Doug, Seems a little odd to see the cracks come together in the same place (corner of the state)??? Glad I asked the question as I could not understand how they could possibly be the same.
I just knew that was coming when I typed the words. :smile The question is though - why the corner of this design? Maybe it happens more than I realize on other quarters or maybe the folks at the mint catch them before they really get out (later would surprise me a little). I suspect that they only catch them (die issues) at the end of a run or if the die really comes apart. This was so obvious I am surprised I have not seen them on ebay - then again I have not been watching for errors. It was really a fluke that I received these straight from a new roll. Really a neat day for me - doesn't take much to make me happy... Best Regards
Think about it for a second, on a die the design is incuse and in this case there is a right angle in the design. So after the die has been used repeatedly in that corner the metal begins to get stretched out. Eventually it cracks. Arcs, circles and softer design edges can also cause cracks, but not as quickly as a right angle can. It's that way with most things in nature. Say you pour a concrete slab around a square column. The very first place the concrete is going to crack is off one of the corners of that column. Nature doesn't like right angles By the way, th emint could care less about small die cracks on business strike coins. Yeah they will retire the die if it gets bad, but only then. They want to get as much use out of each die as they can.
I received a couple of these in change the other week. I noticed the die crack right away. All of the ones I received as change were the same for me though.
