I glad you bought this. These pics are much better than the cell phone ones you posted earlier. But the several small nicks around the rim make me think this was in a necklace bezel at one time. Or maybe in a ring. I am not putting this coin down at all because the $ 2.50 Indians are my second favorite. I have a complete set raw except for the 1911-D. So probably AU-MS, but cleaned sometime during it's life.
@McBlzr The rim was the only thing that caught my eye under a loupe. Why would you think it was cleaned? It is very lustrous. I only see the wear on the headdress, but I am new to Gold and want to learn more.
There appear to be some marks on the rim but in my unprofessional opinion they do not detract from the grade or appearance. You bought a nice coin for the money.
If it was in a bezel or ring, it would come in contact with sweat & body oils. Depending how often the owner worn the jewelry pieces. Therefore they would try to clean it from time to time. Not saying for sure that your 1914-D was treated this way in it's former life. I am just showing you the possibility. Here is a 1909-D $5 Indian that I bought from a guy that needed money. Notice the slight darker toned ring around the OBV edge of the coin. Which is evidence it was in a bezel. My coin has probably been cleaned several times before I got it. But gold can still look sorta lustrous. Also since the design of the Indian & the Eagle were incuse (below the surface of the fields) they did not show wear quickly. The fields & edges showed the wear first.
Here is my 14D graded PCGS 62. This isn't a well made issue and many have some striking weakness. Depending on the field luster of yours, somewhere between 58 - 62 - if it hasn't been cleaned.
