(Hopefully somebody can pass this along)

How much pressure does it take to properly stamp a quarter?

I have access to a 1 ton arbor press and a steel stamp and it doesn't even mar the surface...

Thumb pressure. You just apply the stamp and press.:smuggrin:

    Really? That's strange.

I counter stamped a quarter once with a good hit using a hammer. The letters P and R o_O

Seems like a question for @dcarr, perhaps?

I'm a mechanical electrical engineer and by coincidence working on shear pressure to sever solid logs of plastic. I did a quick calculation and on a blank the size of a quarter you would need 80 tons of pressure. I can bore you with Brunel hardness and all types of engineering stuff but if you want to do this I can show you how and it will cost under a $1000 but you will never achieve mint production although you may end up in Jail !

If you just want a countermark though, about 30 tons will make a crisp impression

Isn't there a difference between striking pressure and tonnage. I can give and end result better with a strike from a hammer, than a vice.

I was going to ask about the surface area of the die making the countermark...

16mm x about 5mm - class two lines of about 5 chars each.
