Found a fun one today. 1982 p on copper bronze with the small date. Cool all by itself. but i am looking at the left side of the coin. looking for opinions on source of the missing design elements. i am wondering if this is a partial collar or simply unusual pmd. opinions?
Looks like a combination of a misaligned die strike and excessive wear not from normal circulation. Misaligned die strikes usually are only on the obverse. To clarify, misaligned die strikes happen when one or both dies are misaligned. An off center strike is caused by the planchet being struck while not fully in the collar. So a off center strike is an incorrectly centered planchet and a misaligned die strike is an incorrectly centered die(s).
Misaligned die strike. But I think the missing design elements are due to circulation since the rim was gone from the MAD…imo…Spark
Yes on the small date. Yes on the misaligned die strike. If it was ALSO misaligned on the reverse, then it is off center which is better than MAD.
