Odd 1880-S

    I found this dollar going through a collection the other day. The 1 and the 8 have been double stamped or something... I talked to a couple dealers that have been dealing with dollars over the years and no one else had seen one like this so I figure someone out on the net has to seen this type before. I looked in the top 100 Vam's and couldn't find anything. I apologize for the image quality, my photo editing skills are a bit lacking. Let me know what you think.

    A repunched date.

    thank you, I was sitting here typing up the post and I could not think of the term repunched date. that is why I put or something...
    How common are these in the 18?

    repunched dates, mintmarks, etc are pretty common on a lot of 19th century coin series.

    Most of these are VAM's the problem is identifying which one it is.

    Looks like a VAM 31 to me. :thumb:
