The wonder of batches.... In my mixed batch was this coin. Sleeping, unobserved and ignored by me until I just photographed it. It's not pretty and I won't keep it but I thought it worth mentioning. Licinius - AE Follis Obv:- IMP C VAL LICAN (sic) LICINIVS P F AVG, radiate draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:- IOVI CONSERVATORI, Jupiter standing left, holding Victory and sceptre, eagle at foot left, captive at foot right, X II Mu right Minted in Antioch (//SMANTZ). A.D. 321-323 Reference:- RIC VII Antioch 35 var (LICAN for LICIN) Martin
I had a similar thing happen last year. The Gordian III ant below was from a mixed lot. I didn't notice the reverse legend error when I first cataloged the coin, but only when I photographed it some months later. GORDIAN III AR Antoninianus. 4.02g, 22mm, Rome mint, early AD 239 - early 240. RIC IV 67 var (rev legend mispelled, error not recorded in RIC, but cf. Gemini Auction IV (8 Jan 2008) Lot 460 for another example from same rev die). O: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right. R: LIBERATAS (sic!) AVG III, Liberalitas standing front, head left, holding counter in right hand and cornucopiae in left hand.
