Augustus and Agrippa Crocodile AE

    Mikey, Yours is the one with the teeth on top of the jaw. That's the one I want. The engraver must have had a bit too much vino.

    So I know a crocodile appears on Augustus's "AEgypto Capta" denarius celebrating the victory at Actium and the subsequent subjugation of Egypt. But isn't this OP coin a coin struck at or for Nimes in France? Why the crocodile? What is this coin's story?

    It's my understanding the colony at Nimes was settled by veterans who served in Egypt.

    That's my understanding as well. Augustus gave his men land to settle and this represents them.

    In Summer 1978, i visited Brighton,England.I remember visiting an antique shop on the sea, and seeing about 35-40 of these types on a table next to the counter.
    Since then i have wondered what they were doing in England.
