I have a 1987 NGC MS70 Silver Eagle...anyone have any idea what it is worth?...NGC Pop 20 out of 19,952 graded...2nd lowest NGC SE pop...

One thing...I noticed this coin has a few scratches on the fields on the reverse...i am wondering if this is very common w/ this issue and NGC takes that into account when issuing the grade for this issue...

    Thanks

If the coin has a scratch it CANNOT be MS-70

    The case may be scratched.

In any case, the total population must be taken into account. This includes NGC, PCGS, IGC, and Anacs.

There are recent dealer trades in the $1000 range for the 1987 Silver Eagle in MS-70

    $1000.00?

WOW! where can I find a 1987 NGC MS70 at $1000.00 ? I saw one sell on eBay last night for $4275.00...

Keep your eyes open, go to shows, talk to dealers. There is a whole world outside of Ebay.

NGC lists it for $1600 so you should be able to get one for around $1000. I have a 1996 NGC MS70 that lists for $9,000 and I would be happy to get half that much. Not that I'm trying to sell it.

A bit of a handicap is that NGC calls coins which look like this "70's":

    MS70.jpg

That's an 1887, by the way. Any wonder why it only sold for $700 (as have the last two NGC 1987 MS70's offered at Heritage, both hairlined)?

because people graded the coin for themselves instead of taking NGC at their word?

    Heaven forbid. :p

That said, this is one niche where PCGS enjoys a decided and substantial market advantage over NGC, and 69's from either service are not worth the cost of slabbing. I do not know what the buyers of the two coins I mentioned were thinking, unless they're resellers planning on preying upon the uninformed.

I have to agree with SuperDave on this one. If they determined they were anything less than MS70's than a $700 buy makes no sense. I assume they were buying them to for resale according to the slab.
