Plating issue…a large plating blister.

 

Mis-aligned Die (MAD) ? Don't know what that is in front of Abe's face.

 

I wonder if the zinc is rotting from within and pushing up the plating.

 

We don’t know how old that picture is, but once the plating is breached it corrodes quickly if they remain unprotected. Even split-plating can be protected to avoid or retard corrosion, but you gotta really want to go that route.

And remember, 1985 was year 4 of CPZ and it took 8-10 years for the contractors to get it correct ( or, kinda close to correct if you take my meaning ).

So my money is on contractors plating issue…Spark

 

Ah, the celebrated "sneezing Abe cent" of 1985!

 

There are two issues I can see Sal. The first iss slightly misaligned die strike. Not enough to really grab my attention. The second is that really nice plating blister in front of Abe’s face. Plating blisters are common on zinc cents and this is a nice one. Enough to bring a small premium but not that much. If the blister was open the zinc would corrode quickly. And I know of nothing that could stop it. It looks to be in tack and the coin should be protected to avoid breaking the blister.

As some have mentioned, plating issues are very common on the first years of the Zincolns.
