Out of the same original roll,,I pulled 5 gem bu bie varieties. Are these that common or was it a good find for a 54 S lincoln. Don't see any on ebay to compare but the ones I have seen sell on ebay look a little different than mine. Mine has a dash in the field/collar at almost 3:00. All 5 have that exact dash. Anyone know what caused the dash and is it common or rare. Any help or opions would be greatly appreciated. Picture attached.
From the pic, it looks like damage after leaving the mint. What it looks like to me is that these coins were stuck in a platic tube and someone used a knife to cut the tube open. (Many dealers do this).
No it is not damage. It is stamped in just as clearly as the date or motto. Am 100% positive it was minted like that. Definitely not knife damage....is an outie not an innie. lol. Also cutting open a roll would mark coins at different spots unless all coins were put in roll at the same exact rotation. A knife would cut the rim. This dash is actually in the field going up to the collar and stopping., Besides I opened the original shotgun roll myself so I know a knife was not involved and these are all superb coins that you really can tell were never handeled outside the mint. This dash looks perfectly straight and as if the I in liberty fell off and got stamped in up in the field. Thanks for the opinion. Any more out there would be appreciated.
Well as I can only offer an opinion based on pics, it isn't an exact opinion. If the line is raised, it would have to have come from the mint. That I agree with. In that case, it would wither be a broken or cracked die that would cause the raised lines, or a piece of lint still retained on the coin.
If all the coins with this BIE variety have the same raised marked in the same location, it is probably some form of die tool gouge or polishing mark. Should have little effect on the value of the coin as a BIE variety except as a marker for this die. Nice looking coin...
