Updating Washington silver quarters before handing them off to my son, ran across this and looks like an inverted mintmark. It's a Large S type, around XF40.

No mention of it in the Red Book or PCGS Coin Facts. A wide search of the web yielded no hits at all. It really does look like an inverted mintmark though.

Does anyone have any source for more info? Does anyone agree it is inverted? Much thanks to all in advance...Spark

I'm no quarter expert, and not even one-quarter of an expert in just about anything, but that S sure looks inverted to me. Nice find!

Well, I found the answer at Lincolncentresource.com…under San Francisco mintmark styles. This one is not inverted.

It is MMS-006, Ball Serif S, one of 2 types of mintmark used in 1944 on San Francisco coins. Those used on cents were also used on quarters as well, apparently.

So, thanks for the support but just a false alarm…:-( Spark

Glad you found the correct answer to your coin. By the way, I would have been wrong.
