Wheat cent Question??? Just a quick Question on wheat cents. Am mostly into morgans but have recently opened an original shotgun roll of 1954 s cents. Have a bunch of very nice red gem bu lincolns but a few of these have an almost flourescent yellow/green tone to it. Absolutely gorgeous but was wondering what caused this. Hopefully my avatar is big enough but you can look at the picture and clearly see the awesome looking streak going across the obverse. Any help on how this where this toneing comes from and if it is a valuable or collectible coin. bigd
First, you need to edit your question, some people take offense when you call them pennies instead of cents. To me they are the same, I mean, who has ever heard of cent candy. Anyway, the cause of the toning is enviromental, moisture (humidity), temperature, light, possiblely the PH factor of the paper wrap, etc. are all factors that can cause toning. OH yeh, welcome to the forum.
Hey thanks for the rapid responce. Still trying to figure out how to use the forum but hopefully I have attached a photo attachment so hopefully someone can get a closer look and and tell me specifically about this type toneing. Is truely gorgeous to the eye,,(camera needs some help.lol.) so was wondering if this is a valuable coin or just another average cent. Camera looks brown but is truely a nice red with very few microscopic marks. any opinions would be appreciated.
The 54-S really isn't a major value in the Lincoln series, but it is a nice coin. The toning is caused by so many factors that it is impossible to tell you exactly what caused this particular coin to exhibit the streaks. (Sorry)
