This is mine, not nearly so excellent as yours, it's rough and the reverse is weak. But the portrait is o.k. for me.
that is a nice one. i like the reverse counting board. all the coins on here are good, prolly not as expensive as the OP was.
Actually there was little competition at the auction so I got it for half of what it probably should have cost . On the other hand, I find good Sestertii of Balbinus much harder to find so it will be extremely hard for me to get an equal companion piece for Pupienus with my budget...
A sharp, handsome portrait. Great coin! Pupienus sestertii are easier to find than Balbinus, I agree. I have not been able to find a suitable one yet. This is my sestertius of Pupienus. Pax Publica type.
My thoughts exactly. Reason why, after I've had the following Pupienus sestertius for years I parted with it, finding myself unable to get it's Balbinus alter ego I had my revenge with denarii Pupienus, Sestertius Rome mint, AD 238 IMP CAES M CLOD PVPIENVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right VICTORIA AVGG, Victory standing, head turned on the left, holding wreath in her right hand, palm and drapery in her left hand 24.9 gr 31 mm Ref : RIC IV # 23a, Cohen # 38 Q
I thought this would have been a nice alter ego for mine and joined my very first ever live auction for it today but was outbid by far - it went away for 1.200 British pounds (a multitude of what I paid for my Pupienus). *sniff*
Then you were bidding against me.... but we both lost so all is good. Still, I did not walk away empty handed.
What did you get ? That brassy Faustina II exceeded my budget also... so I think about buying some cheap and ugly Balbinus out of pure frustration now.
There were a large numbers of drool-inducing coins in that auction. I wasn't able to watch it close. What did the Colosseum sestertius bring?
