Certainly not the rarest of Emperors or the highest of grades (and don´t complain about the "missing" patina, lol), but seen thru a Leica lens in the warm sunlight I do think this does look quite impressive:
My only Sestertius is pretty worn: Antoninus Pius (138-161 AD) Æ Sestertius, 31.91mm, 25.5g; Rome Mint, 151/2 AD. Obv: ANTONINVS AVG - PIVS P P TR P XV [or XVI] - Laureate head of Antoninus Pius right. Rev: SA-LVS - A-VG COS IIII/ S|C - Salus standing left feeding serpent arising from altar, and leaning on staff. RIC 886 or 906
Nice Sestertius @Julius Germanicus ! And everyone else's Pius' are great also. I do not have a Sestertius, but I do have a couple silvers of him: Antoninus Pius: RI Antoninus Pius 138-161 BCE AR Denarius RI Antoninus Pius 138-161 BCE BI Tet Alexandria Egypt Dikaiosyne Scales And his WIFE: RI Faustina Sr 138-140 CE AR Denarius m Antoninus Pius 17-4mm 3.2g
Great posts!! I'll contribute a denarius and a sestertius that I purchased over the last several months.
That's a good one JG My current Pius sestertius, followed by another one I parted with a few years back Antoninus Pius, Sestertius Rome mint, AD 140/144 ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III, laureate head right PROVIDENTIAE DEORVM, winged thunderbolt, S - C in field 25.86 gr, 31 mm Ref : Cohen #682, RCV # 4208, RIC III # 618 Antoninus Pius, Sestertius minted in Rome, 159/160 AD ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP TRP XXIII, Laureate head of Antoninus right PIETATI AVG COS IIII, Pietas standing left, holding child, and two children at her feet, SC in field 26,32 gr Ref : Cohen #621, RCV #4205 Q
There is just something about large ancient bronzes/(orichalcum). They are just so warm and comforting to look at and hold.
Great portrait on the O.Ps coin! I like the patina on this one. Antoninus Pius was a handsome guy and his portrait looks somewhat majestic and grave on his coinage. These are the examples of his sestertii I have managed to add to my collection over the years.
And my last addition. A low grade example, but I like the reverse on this one: maybe there is a way to gently remove the green oxide deposits.
Great coin Julius Germanicus, I love those worn but visually splendid sestertius, especially of that guy Antoninus Pius. I have a a few but this worn sestertius of his column is one of my favorites just under 20gm, has its share of handling over the years.
Very nice! And @Eduard, what a sequence of AP's! Awesome. Mine has TOO MUCH patina on the obverse (probably not original? It's sort of "dusty" looking). The side lighting in the photo makes it look in higher relief than it actually is. Some of you recommended Verdi-care to me earlier... do you think it might help this coin? Bigger photo of obverse:
