Buying gold coins

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by groundhog53946, Feb 6, 2017.

  1. Hi everyone! Ive recently joined and now I would like to ask my first question. I would like to own a gold coin, preferably American and probably a dollar coin due to financial reasons. Now I'm not real picky about the quality, just something in decent shape. Now I know very little about gold coins so I'm asking how would I go about buying and not getting ripped off. I'm guessing that I should stay away from fleabay but what about companies like apmex? Do you go to coin shops and trust them? Curious to here what the experts say. Thanks for any input.

    I like Provident, lower prices.
    Apmex, and other places.
sometimes these large places sell on eBay for a little discount, so comparison shop.

if you are a survivalist and need to get silver/gold, vaults, colloidal silver and survival food at the same place then sdbullion.com is the place to go LOL

Small US gold coins are widely faked. I recommend you purchase a coin in an ANACS, PCGS, or NGC slab and feel free to post a good photograph here before you buy.

Note that sometimes slabs are faked. You can check the certificate number on the grading company website to get a warm-fuzzy-feeling about the slab's authenticity before you buy.

I'm assuming that you want a real & historical US gold coin. Here is a 2 1/2 dollar gold coin which includes the Indian in reverse relief (incuse).

With a little shopping, you could probably find one in mint-state 60 to mint-state 62 for a small percentage above spot.

You're just starting. Before you buy coins with numismatic value, I would advise you to stick to bullion rounds, which sell for a small premium over spot. 1/10th American gold Eagles will work.

So will Mexican 2 and 2.5 Peso gold coins issued through 1947. They were biz strike, but trade like junk.

Welcome to CT. So now, you have a choice. Do you want bullion gold coins, or US Mint gold coins? There are more choices with the US Mint coins, so do a little research first, then decide. After you've decided what to collect, according to your budget, then decide where to buy them from. :)

Where? I see heavy premiums on quarter-eagles. You can get cleaned half-eagles close to melt (around $300 today), but the only quarter-eagles I've seen close to $150 have been holed or mangled. Where should I be looking?

Best I've been able to find are about double melt. And then I can usually turn a small profit on those. I would love finding MS graded Indians for close to $150.

Sounds like there's too much buying competition where you buy. $150 for a quarter eagle isn't quite an everyday thing where I live, but it's not uncommon either.

With the premiums on dollar gold coins you'd be much better off buying a quarter eagle as I see others have already mentioned. I'm also with @jwitten that general pricing is usually around 2x melt, although sometimes you can find one for around $250 if you're patient.

I'd also like to be able to find them for $150 or a little above melt, that's unheard of for me at least for MS quarter eagles and I wouldn't expect to find that if I were you.

Depends where he is. If he's in eastern Pennsylvania, it's not that tough. Two words: Bid Board.

I'm not clear what the OP is after, a collectible US gold coin or a bullion coin.

If you have a local owned coin shop, get to know the staff. They are usually very willing to educate you towards making the best purchase you can afford. They should be knowledgeable enough to ensure real, correctly graded coins. I personally prefer Raw coins over Slab. Mid 19th century common date style 1/4 oz coins are within most collecting budgets over a period of time.

I have purchased from Apmex with no problems and from trusted dealers' shops. When buying gold from a dealer in person, I almost always have an established relationship that that person beforehand. I wouldn't wander into a shop and drop four figures on someone I've never talked to before.

I don't really like buying gold coins raw because counterfeits are rampant and I don't have burgeoning confidence in my fake coin detection abilities. Slabbed coins can often mean higher premiums, but also added security for newbies. If you're new to this, you should definitely use extreme caution when buying raw gold.

But you'll probably hear something slightly different from everyone you ask. :D

  17. I'm hoping to get an older American gold coin because I like the idea of American history that goes with the coin. Being in a slab isn't important to me at this time unless it's the only way that I can know that it's real and even then I've heard of fakes getting by the graders also. But for the right price, a foreign coin would do

  18. I'm in central Wisconsin. I guess I haven't really checked out prices in my area as I didn't really know what might be the best route. Kind looked on eBay but that's more risk than I care for at this time. Only just found a coin and gold shop near me so I hope to visit that soon

Fakes getting by NGC or PCGS is a far less risk than buying a raw coin that turns out to be a fake.

  20. I'm a small time prepper. Trying to get a small hoard of silver for trade. Mostly just what I can find metal detecting but if the price is agreeable to me, I will buy some also. That and I've always told my wife that when I die she needs to sell my machines and coins to get me cremated.

  21. Us gold coins. Was thinking a dollar coin but after reading some of the replies, it sounds like I should go for a quarter eagle
