Hey everyone! Just got my grades from a recent PCGS submission of US coins I thought worthy of grading. Thought it would be fun to both share the images and do a GTG. I'll admit, I only "correctly" guessed what PCGS would say on ONE out of 13 coins (7/13 times I was too harsh - in fact, sometimes WAY too harsh) so don't worry too much about getting this "right." If you want an extra challenge, see if you can guess the coin I had right! Try not to cheat! Enjoy! (I'll post grades tomorrow morning before I head out to the LCS in search of NEWPS.) Coin 1: 1873 (Open 3) Indian Head Cent Coin 2: 1903 Liberty Nickel Coin 3: 1831 Capped Bust Dime Coin 4: 1856 (Small Date) Seated Liberty Dime Coin 5: 1861 Seated Liberty Dime Coin 6: 1892 Barber Quarter (Tripled Die Reverse) Coin 7: 1937 S Washington Quarter (Doubled Die Obverse)
1873 IHC - MS65 1903 Nickel - MS63 1831 Bust - Unc Details - scratch (not much experience with these) 1856 Seated - AU58 1861 Seated - MS62 1892 Barber - MS63 1937 Wash - MS64 I would guess you got the Indian correct
1873 Cent MS-65 BN 1903 Nickel MS-65 1831 Dime AU-58 1856 Dime MS-64 1861 Dime MS-65 1892 Quarter MS-62 1937 Quarter MS-66
Grades so far (thanks for playing coins with us!) @ksmooter61 - 0/7 (and it was not the IHC I got correct) @Mr. Numismatist 3/7 Don't feel bad about not getting them all - as I mentioned, I only technically got one correct as well.
1873 IHC: MS64RB 1903 Liberty Nickel: MS64 1831 CBD: MS61 1856 Seated Dime: MS62 1861 Seated Dime: AU55 1892 Barber Quarter: MS62 1937 Washington Quarter: MS65 I think you got the Barber correct. Other than the quarter series, I have never collected these coins and have no experience at all with seated coinage. The Barber has the look of a 63/64 but a closeup inspection of the obverse keeps it at MS62 IMO.
1 - MS65RB 2 - MS64 3 - AU55 4 - MS63 5 - MS66+ 6 - MS62 7 - MS65 I think you got the Lib Nickel correct.
1) 1873 IHC: PF58 2) 1903 Liberty $.05: MS62 3) 1831 Capped Bust $.10: AU55 4) 1856 Seated Liberty $.10: AU55 5) 1861 Seated Liberty $.10: XF45 6) 1892 Barber $.25: MS63 7) 1937 S Washington $.25: MS64 Very nice bunch 'o coins right there.
Nice looking IHC! I don't know the series but there appears to be the slightest rub on the high points, could be strike related but I'll give two grades. lol AU-58, or, more likely, MS-64 BN (and call it "cabinet friction")
All right! Good morning! It's a beautiful day for revealing coin grades! As I mentioned earlier, I was only "correct" (in that my opinion matched that of PCGS') on ONE coin out of this submission. I sent in 13 coins in total. One coin (the super worn but IMO just-legible-enough 1896 S Barber Quarter I pulled from a junk bin) did not grade (Authenticity Unverifiable.) Three coins - not pictured here - received UNC Details (Cleaned) grades: 1845 Seated Liberty Dime with RPD f108a (I thought it would grade MS64, which would be a really fun find.) 1883 (No CENTS) Liberty Nickel (Formerly a PCI MS66, I guessed it would get a couple steps down and come back as an MS64. womp womp...) 1876 Seated Liberty Dime (I honestly thought I'd found a proof with its flat rims, mirror-like fields, and sharp details.) Two coins from the submission I did not include in my GTG due to them being proofs, and since it's really difficult to grade a proof from pictures I'll just share them: 1904 Proof Indian Head Cent (PCGS PR65RB) (I was concerned they might AU/impair it due to the different toning on the obverse, but in the end I felt it would be a PR64RB. I was happy with the bump up a grade!) 1883 3 Cent (CuNi) (PCGS PR66CAM) (Again, I was very conservative in my expectations for this coin, thinking I'd be happy with a PR63 or PR64, eventually settling on PR63. Very happy with the 66CAM.) Back to the coins I actually included in the GTG Coin 1: 1873 (Open 3) Indian Head Cent My predicted grade was MS64BN. PCGS came back at me with a HUGE win and called it MS66BN. Coin 2: 1903 Liberty Nickel My predicted grade was MS62, worried about the weak strike and dig in the obverse fields. PCGS, however, came back at me with another big bump at MS65. Coin 3: 1831 Capped Bust Dime I was pretty close with this one, predicting an AU53. PCGS came back with another bump up at AU58. Coin 4: 1856 (Small Date) Seated Liberty Dime My predicted grade for this one was MS64, and PCGS called it an MS62. Pretty sure I originally paid AU50 money for it, so it's still a win. Coin 5: 1861 Seated Liberty Dime Well, apparently I was WAY too harsh on this one, thinking it would come back an AU55 (I still have my notes saying I paid AU55 bid for it.) PCGS gave me my biggest jump up, though, calling it an MS65. Wowza! Coin 6: 1892 Barber Quarter (Tripled Die Reverse) This is the ONLY coin on the submission where my expected grade matched the one received from PCGS at AU58. It has luster, it has details, but I felt like it had enough clear wear on it that it didn't stand a chance at MS. Coin 7: 1937 S Washington Quarter (Doubled Die Obverse) Finally, a recent cherrypick from a coin show (for $10!) and the coin that spurred me to actually send in the submission. My pics made the coin look absolutely horrible and definitely AU (I really have to work on that, I guess) but PCGS gave me a big win at MS62. The coin really does look MS in hand - tons of luster. I was low key really hoping for a low MS grade on this one, even though I felt it would probably come back as an AU58. Not that there is (or needs to be) a "winner", but by my tally (fell free to double check me) the winner is... @Mr.Q, who got every single one correct by stating they'd be somewhere between a 1 and 70. hahaha... @Lehigh96 was correct that I matched PCGS on the Barber Quarter. Really though, I think @Mr. Numismatist with 3/7 correct did the best out of all of us, myself included. It was a challenging group to grade, to be honest, but I ended up with 7/13 coming back as higher grades than expected plus one "sort of" Top Pop (the MS66BN 1873 IHC is tied for finest in BN even though there are MS66 RB and MS66 RD plus I think an MS66+RD.) I think the ones that came back cleaned will be inspected and possibly sent off to another TPG to get a second opinion at a straight grade, and the 1896 S is definitely going elsewhere to see if someone else will attribute it. Thanks for stopping by and enjoying my post!
That was a lot of fun @stldanceartist - thanks for the challenge! I was 0/7 but close on a couple at least.
