These are all at PCGS right now. I’ll update with TV’s when they come back. There’s also a 41-D that has the the possibility to go 67BN and a 31-P that could go 65/66BN. I’m not expecting super high grades on the memorials since they will be part of a registry I’ve been building of raw coins bought in albums sub $50 each, strictly on eBay. It’s more of a way to show collectors that coins with great eye appeal can be obtained without having to spend $1000+.
View attachment 1686682 They probably think they’re doing you a favor by designating this a Red. I have a 1941-D that was sold on Heritage 10-15 years ago with a group of 20-25 41-D’s That were obviously from the same roll. The cert numbers were sequential. Every coin in the group was given a grade of 67RB except for one or two 66RB’s. A couple of years ago I had the bright idea of having mine regraded thinking it would break the log jam of 67RB’s and maybe go 67+. I was mortified when it came back. Not only did it not upgrade, but dropped a grade and was given an RD designation. I eventually had it regraded and got the RB back, but not the numerical grade. I settled for a 66+. I still think it’s undergraded.
Man, PCGS sucks....that's a BEAUTIFUL example. I assisted a friend for about 4 years with his PCGS submissions of memorial cents. I could not believe most of the grades we got back - for sure he had some top pops but they knocked 'em down 1 grade. Out of hundreds of submissions, he only achieved a single top pop in RB (it's also an example coin on their website today). Honestly, I reviewed thousands of coins for him that he already whittled down from hundreds of OBW rolls - the best of the best of the best. Some damn near flawless coins with extreme luster (some of the best I've ever seen) and clean fields were submitted - conclusion: 100% PCGS keeps the top pops down intentionally. In many cases, we submitted coins that were obviously nicer than existing top pops, only to get dropped 1 point.
Did that happen to be part of "Ray's Hoard" from our very own CT? He found a miracle roll and sold them to other members - I own 2 of them. The others all came back 67 as I recall. I never submitted mine because I know I'd be the first 65's from the roll with my PCGS luck.
That was a great hoard of 41-D's. They were all from a single OBW roll. As I remember Robec got one of those as well. I still have a few that I kept back, plus one that someone else sent in that graded 67RB, and I bought it back from him. My photos are not as flashy as TVs. The TV's I've seen from that hoard are outrageous.
I do have 2 from that hoard, but Rays hoard came a few years after the 1941-D I posted. Here are my 2 from Ray. I do have 1 from that hoard, but Rays hoard came a few years after the 1941-D I posted. Here is mine from Ray. Here is another 1941-D I have that was part of the hoard from the other 20+ hoard. This one is still in the original slab. The original cert number of the other 41-D ended with 03. The last time I checked most of the others from that same group still had the original numbers. They were all sequential if you have the interest to check them out.
