Hello everyone. I hope I am not too far off topic here... I am trying to find where people are discussing medals. I bought a jewelry lot with this item in it, and although I can usually find just about anything I look for online, this medal is alluding me. It is a medal of Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart and written on the back is "In Memoriam 1791-1931". Written also at the bottom is "J. Tautenhayn" and it is signed on the back 585 and it is 14k gold. I did some research on Tautenhayn and found a little about who he was, but I cannot find many examples of his work that have sold. I am trying to determine if this medal has any value other than its scrap value. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Hang in there Steve, paddyman or someone else will come along that's pretty good at finding these things when no one else can.

First, welcome to the neighborhood @Steve Stitz !

There is no specific forum for medals. As a rule, I just use Coin Chat like you did.

I checked my Forrer reference, and this medallion is not mentioned as part of the works of Tautenhayn, Sr. or Jr.

The drawback to using the Exonumia thread is that it makes it difficult to discuss the history of any particular medal. Exonumia is a catch-all for all sorts of odds & ends, not just medals, and other posts could interrupt the flow and exchange of information about a single item.

Got it. As you stated there is no specific forum for medals. The exonumia thread has a lot of regular readers with frequent updates to keep it alive. Post it in "Coin Chat" and I think it will sink like a stone with little interest. Just my .02.

Other than that, the question was already raised with little feedback... here in "Coin Chat".

It would be better to have a thread dedicated to one particular medal get pushed down the list of "Recent Topics" than to have a particular medal buried amongst hundreds and hundreds of unrelated items.

Then the OP needs to request a title change or needs to start a new thread, but I understand your point. I just know that that the exonumia thread has a regular following and medals are a favorite topic. It gets bumped frequently due to all of the new additions.

No, you check back in a few days. I've been collecting medals for a couple of decades, and I've already seen it happen many, many times in the last 7 years on these forums. You've been here a couple of months.

Thank you for the info guys. I will try the other thread, and I am going to look online for some other medal forums. Hopefully I will find someone who will know something about this particular medal.

Pretty tough to find any info on this Medal. I'm sure there is value above melt though, to the right collector. The dates are confusing to me. Mozart was born 1756-died 1791. What is the significance of the date on your Medal? There is a large bronze similar to yours on ebay with a starting bid of 60.00. That's about all I could come up with. Good luck on your quest. http://www.ebay.com/itm/IN-MEMORIAM...105428?hash=item5b32e83fd4:g:x8EAAOSwj85YOIJ6

I tried to no avail last night also. It's going to be a tough one. But there must be some kind of Medalist Society out there somewhere. If you think this is tough try finding birth & death records from Krakow, which was mostly destroyed in the War. Everything tends to lead back to ancestry.com and in the past they proved useless in my case. Danged if I will pay for this.

Hi there old49er. Thanks so much for the input. Did you notice that the dates were different on the medal on eBay (instead of 1791-1931 it is 1756-1956). I am not sure what these dates represent either. The fact that the one I have is made of gold makes me wonder what the event might have been. Here is the one I had found on eBay that is also similar.

I will test the theory soon that the medal may be worth more than scrap, as I buy and sell and it will soon be time to put this on a auction site.
