    Vey interesting!
I say it is some sort of Planchet Defect. If it were a Lamination the copper center would be exposed. Looks like it was struck after the Clad layer was added.

    1. Yeah, I'm glad the actual historical event didn't unfold that way.

    2. After viewing the, um, anatomical detail in close-ups 4 and 7, I'm finding myself a bit squeamish about the ones I'm finding in change. I just checked, and if anything, it's more prominent in-... er, person. Ew.

thank you for that little bit of shared knowledge. only other laminations I found were on LC's. could there have been a lamination prior to the clad layer being added? or is that not how the process goes?

Cool. Does look like a planchet defect before the strike

As an aside, I always think of this Doctor Who scene when I see the FM quarter...

  8. SapphireSilver

    SapphireSilver I vote for coins!

The obverse looks a little strange too...the mark through the S in States and through the nose and in front of the neck. Full picture of the obverse please.
    Still learning...........

    Or, possible struck thru.
    I'd vote planchet defect though.
