I have a few barbarous coins and while I think the are neat, I am not the biggest fan. When I saw this however, I fell in love with the style and was lucky to get it cheap. I really love the style of the horses dragon like head. Constantius II barbarous imitation 3.9g 21.52 mm FEL TEMP REPARATIO Blundered legend pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right, Blundered legend soldier spearing Horseman A much nicer example of the style can be seen here: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-134529
Very cool coin Randy. I actually just finished attributing this one about 10 minutes ago. It's a bit ugly since I had to zap it a bit unfortunately. I think it's a Constantius II Sirmium mint anyway. I could be wrong
Nevermind I think it's a Constantius Gallus. I can't find the dot S dot field mark with Constantius II as Caesar. Man these Constantinian coins can be confusing
Nice! Not all had the same field mark but yeah, it's Constantius Gallus. Notice it's not diademed (head wear). Right mint though. I'm pretty sure yours is RIC Sirmium 41 you can check the PDF here: http://www.catbikes.ch/coinstuff/coins-ric.htm I only have one from Sirmium at the moment. Constantius II, but similar to yours. Constantius II AE3. 351-355 AD. D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right, Delta behind / FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO, Soldier standing right, right leg raised, spearing a fallen horseman who is bare-headed, reaching backwards, A beneath horse, BSIRM in ex. Sirmium RIC VIII 40
The short answer is "I don't know." Hopefully someone else (Doug maybe?) can give you a better answer.
Cool barbarous issues guys!! I have none (LRB) but I'm sure @dougsmit and @maridvnvm (among others) have quite a few.
Cool! I have a few barbarous LRB, my favorite is this imitation of Constantine I with reverse of two Victories inscribing shield over altar:
randygeki => that's a very cool barbarous example (congrats) Ummm, I have a barbarous and a non-barbarous example of Constantius-II ...
I love the way many show a simplified alphabet for the less literate among us. I understand the I's but can you find the -, T and O's, too? Parthicus' coin has a completely different letter set and uses twice as many letters. Barbarous coins were made wherever their maker was when they were made. There is no reason to believe mine and yours were made within a thousand miles of each other unless you can find some evidence to pinpoint a 'mint'.
I love these imitations, as you may infer from my avatar - also an imitation of a Roman coin, apparently from Germania. Here's a contemporary coin that I like a lot, on the obverse Constantius with a doctor's head mirror, his text saying STAN WIIII, and on the reverse two women playing pingpong.
