Hi all, it's been quite some time since I've posted. I just wanted to drop a line and ask what all the great people here think about my beautiful 1909 vdb here. I've never been able to become more than an armature novice when it comes out to picking a grade. All I know here that despite this not being an s mint (I could only afford to wish), it does have awesome eye appeal, at least in the humble opinion of mine.

Anyway, what do you guys and gals think regarding the value or grade might be. I'm not looking for the moon here but I'd be delighted if the knowledge I gain here informs me it's worth at least twice what i paid for it all those years ago.

Beautiful well struck coin. I would sure take it out of that 2X2 it is living in. Looks like it has been exposed to moisture somewhere along the way and if it starts to rust it will sure attack that pretty cent.

I'm on @Randy Abercrombie 's side here. Take it out of the 2x2 and right now! Get rid of those nasty staples and put it in a really nice holder.
Welcome back to CT. you crazy animal.

That is indeed a nice one. Put it in a new holder, like they said.

Thanks for your replies. Advice taken. That's one of the things I've always loved about this place is that I always remembered learning things that I didn't know I should know, or getting advice about things I never even knew I needed advice on. I don't really have anything nice to put it in currently so I have put it by itself into a coin tube temporarily until I can get a nice capsule to put it, which will probably only be a couple days. I never even gave a second thought about keeping my collection in flips, but I guess that's in big part due to the fact that the vast majority of my collection is things like junk silver or well worn buffalo nickels. I do need to go through and pick out the few that I have that need better preserving. I never even noticed the water exposure before, but now it's all I see.

While I had it naked for the first time in I can't even guess how long is been, I took the opportunity to try to take better pictures as I felt the ones I posted didn't do the coin justice. I hope the details are cleared in these.

So back to my original questions, what do you think about assigning a grade or estimated price on this one? You know I have my own opinions on the matter. I that just know that historically i have been very poor at assigning grades to my own stuff. My brain just can't help being biased. I know we're talking at least AU right? Does anybody see anything that my eyes just aren't seeing that would keep it from grading higher than that? I haven't been able to spot anything more than a few minor blemishes, but I don't know if there's enough there to keep it from grading higher.

That’s at the very least a high end AU, if not an UNC.

So are your thoughts that it could grade UNC but not BU? I know higher grades of BU may merit getting it slabbed, but I didn't think I was anywhere near there. I was secretly wishing I'd get some opinions that maybe it woud grade that high.

It's BU. It's not high end enough to be worth getting slabbed, though.

I would agree with being Uncirculated - say MS63 due to the light spotting. Based on the Red Book and what USACoinbook has it listed at, which are both retail numbers, I would say $30 or so. As m'lord states not worth the cost of having slabbed.

Awesome, well good news it's my grading skill have greatly improved because my initial thoughts were 63-65 at best but I was leaning more towards the 63 side myself. Bad news is that I didn't get that really surprising response that I was secretly hoping for.
