I was looking through some change the other day when I came across this dime. At first I thought it was just badly damaged, but after looking closely at it, I don't think that's the case. I've never seen anything like it and I can't seem to find a similar coin in an online search. Has anyone seen this before? And if so, can you tell me what caused this and maybe give me an idea of the value?

I think that it is damaged.
Reminds me of a science experiment where they stick electrodes to a coin then run electricity through it. They do this to shrink the coin.
    Value 10C
But @eddiespin might have a different value.

Looks like it got caught in the discharge pump of a washing machine. For a couple years at least.

could a weak acid have melted the coin's surface like that?

The collar is affected, so it happened after the coin was minted. Five will get you ten it spent some time in an acid solution.

I'm voting for acid bath, followed by contact with the sidewalk. Still, an interesting piece.

Acid probably makes the most sense. Of course, I was pretty hopeful for it to be something worth value though. Haha. Thanks guys!
