In the attempt to research this Roman Republic coin, I was surprised to see that it is very difficult to find any information about him or his family, the Gens Crepusia. If anyone here has information about this moneyer or knows where I might find more about him or his family, I 'd be more than appreciative. In the meantime, here is the coin in question: PUB CREPUSIUS ROMAN REPUBLIC; GENS CREPUSIA AR Denarius OBVERSE: Laureate head of Apollo right, sceptre over shoulder REVERSE: Horseman right, brandishing spear; P CREPVSI in ex Rome 82 BC 3.64g, 17mm Syd 738a, Cr361/1c, Crepusia 1
Great Denarius @Bing . Much better example than mine (I have a lot more wear). I checked my Sear "Roman Coins and their Values, Vol 1" by Spink. It is a Sear 283, and pretty much states what you have attributed. It further states "usually a control-letter below chin, or with control-symbol below chin and and letter behind." Mine looks like similar controls to yours: nothing under chin, nor any letter behind... Mine was under $50 Loaded Cost.
Looks like there is only speculation. Crawford says "The moneyer is a P. Crepusius, not otherwise known. For speculation on his origio see R. Syme, Historia 1964, 115." Here's that article, which doesn't really help at all Syme, Ronald. “Senators, Tribes and Towns.” Historia: Zeitschrift Für Alte Geschichte, vol. 13, no. 1, 1964, pp. 105–125. www.jstor.org/stable/4434822.
I have the article THE DENARII OF P. CREPUSIUS AND ROMAN REPUBLICATION MINT ORGANIZATION by T. V. Buttrey But sadly there is no biography of the moneyer in question. Here are the first few pages. What follows is a catalogue of the denarii with tables and explanatory text. If you would like to read the whole article let me know, I can email the PDF to you.
And C.A. Hersh wrote this blurb about P. Crepusius in 'Sequence Marks on The Denarii of Publius Crepusius' - The Numismatic Chronicle and Journal of the Royal Numismatic Society Sixth Series, Vol. 12, No. 42 (1952), pp. 52-66
Wow, that's a fantastic OP-winner (congrats big- bro) Oh, and I'm not 100% certain on the skinny that I heard about Gens Crepusia ... but apparently my friend's friend's father's lawyer knew a dude that went out with his Mom ... => yah, the guy sounded like a real chump ... he owed a bunch of money to Brutus and it sounds like he owned some sort of dance-club with a shady rep ... hey, that's all I got Oh, and I hope that you're strapped-in and ready to watch New England versus Atlanta? (I have $5 whole dollas ridin' on Brady's coat-tails) I like you ... I hope that things are good (enough) ... and I always love seeing you buying coins!! Cheers, my best old coin-friend
Well, you guys and gals have found much more than I was able to find. Thanks for the efforts. I've never been a Patriots fan, but this crazy year has changed that. Go Brady, go.
