I once bought 20 rolls of half dollars for coin roll hunting. Found only about 5 coins I wanted to keep which was worth maybe $25 of my time. You could give coin rolls to different people in your family to turn in for you to cut down the load. Especially if you go in with little kids, its hard for the bank to turn them away but the bank manager has told me in many cases; Only this one time as a favor. Coin roll hunting for me isn't worth the time and having to deal wit banks. I've found that going through junk bins at coin dealers and shows was a lot more fun and no headaches.
How do you find banks that have coin counting machines in your area? I'm new to coin roll hunting and am just facing the issue of getting rid of all these rolls of coins!
I sent my son into the bank today to get a box of nickels and 2 boxes of pennies, and he came out with three Bank bags full of change! The tellers told him that someone had passed away and had all this change in their house and they were just talking about how it would be to have a collector come in to get all this change!
Just have to go to dif branches and see I guess. And see there rates and maybe have to open account. Big Cu's in my area have them.
I live in a big city so I have lots of options. I have two banks that I get my boxes from and now only one that I can dump at. They have several branches that have coin machines that I can dump at. If you don't have banks around you that have machines then do it the old fashioned way and roll them. I joined a bank just for my Coin Roll Hunting addiction because they had plenty of coin counting machines. You may have to do the same.
I pick up 2 boxes $1000.00 per week. I have two branches of my credit union that having counting machines. I dump a $1000.00 at one and then alternate to the other the next week. They know I'm coming.
Do you shop Amazon, southwest, applebees, Apple, iTunes? You can dump it all in coinstar and get 100% in a gift card. That's what I do, but I also don't really CRH often.
I'll roll the coins, but I tried to get a couple different businesses to take 2 rolls of small dollars for cash and neither would. So I guess it has to be a bank.
I find myself having to drive further and further to dump now. My girlfriend dumps $750.00 of halves at a time so she cuts out one full dump per week. I go to four different banks and dump $500.00 at a time. I'm driving a lot more because Wells Fargo got rid of their machines and I have a bank that doesn't have as many branches. Defeats the economics of CRH. I may need a break because dumping is wearing me down.
You should use a Sharpie and draw a line on the edge on a long line of halves as a mark that you've seen it before. I'm curious how many are the same ones you've had in the past.
Probably a few. There is a large number of states that the closest Fed serves though. There is one guy that tags every coin with the initials "JK" and I see at least a few of his tags in every box I get which is a lot of boxes.
For about a year, my wife and I would draw $6,000 at one bank in halves, and $5,000 at another bank in halves each week. We turned a lot of coins during a period when I had health issues. Kept a lot of 40% and 90% halves, and several circulated proofs. Sold off the 40%, and have kept the rest.
All of it. They would give us bankers bags (clear plastic), and we would fill to $1000ea. We had extra halves to replace the ones we pulled. We had it down to a science: had a dolly to pull the coin boxes to our vehicle. We would drive to a near, shaded spot, had polyethylene cutting boards in our laps, razor knife to cut the rolls, paper back into boxes, look at roll/coins, pull value coins, replace, put roll into bags until two boxes were gone thru. Couple hours for us to go thru $5k-$6k. Couple sessions per week. Then return full $1k bags back to bank. Glock always at my side. Bank would weigh bags-never had a counting prob.
Sounds like a sweet set up. If they just weighed the bags that is a lot easier than them or you having to dump. The sound it makes alone is enough to drive everyone in the bank batty.
Lol, yeah. My wife makes the best toffee ever! We always ensured that we made life easier, cordial, and gave treats to the gang at each of the banks (3).
So you were able to get 22 boxes a week? Were you dumping at the same banks that you got the boxes from? I'm thinking of giving chocolates to the banks I dump at not the banks that give me boxes. They have to take the bags to the back and dump them.
