Which coin should I keep for my Type Set? Pick the one you like best. Help me decide! Coin A) Coin B)
Though it is lower grade, the contrasting toning on Coin A makes it pop, and this was an easy choice for me, despite the 18-point grade difference. PS- I also like mintmarks on type coins. Especially on Seated minors with the mintmark inside the wreath.
I'm not sure why keep both isn't an option but in this case I would take the second coin. It has better detail so is a better type rep. James
I like the looks of coin A better but I’d stick with coin B due to the better grade and more details.
This one is easily A for me - the lower grade is offset by the strong cameo and lower mintage, and the missing details aren't an issue for me.
Keep the 54-O. Despite lower grade, it's the more desirable coin from a market standpoint. Since your type set is a mid-grade collection, the lower grade than the 1853 shouldn't make a difference to you. Am I putting words in your mouth?
Coin A is winning, but not by a landslide. This one is tough for me, Coin B is technically the one in my set, but Coin A does have a more pleasing look in the photographs, as 1853 coin looks rather one-note, almost monochrome, even if it is the "toned" example between the two. I think of the 3 similar threads I posted, picking a final winner between these two coins is going to be challenge. I also think I might revisit the photograph on Coin B to see how this coins compares in hand. Thank you all for your votes and comments on my coins, I truly appreciate it.
Coin B is what a coin dealer I knew called "a quiet pet." It has sharpness and an original look. Coin A is more flashy because the design is enhanced by the lighter color. It might be natural, and it might not. I tend to think that it isn't. I've been turned off by that look since I owned an 1805 half dollar, which had EF sharpness, but that look many years ago. I came to dislike the coin and replaced it in my type set.
