Which coin should I keep for my Type Set? Which do you like better and why? Coin A) CircCam effect Coin B) Nice even wear with some additional details Please feel free to post comments
You know I'm a sucker for CircCams, but the '40-O is just a bit higher grade, with more feathers on the eagle. And it's mintmarked. I like that. But I voted "can't decide". Edit: came back and made up my mind. Coin B it is.
When it comes to type coins, I like higher grades for examples. Most non-coin collectors (if they are interested in looking at coins) like seeing high grades over rarer dates in my experience.
The second coin is both from New Orleans and appears to be the type 1 No Drapery version. i am a sucker for T-1 coins. james
Coni B, I just like more details when it comes to collecting coins (ignoring other more alluring attributes)
I like the cameo effect of A but as a Type coin the extra detail, for me the eagle's eye, makes B the one I would use.
Keep Coin B or keep both. Pro Coin B: IMHO, you would really have to be a huge fan of the circcam look to overlook Coin B's higher grade, desirable mintmark, higher rarity, and more detail all in a coin that itself has a nice look to it. Pro Keep Both: Coin B, the 1840-O No Drapery is unique among the ND issues for having (almost) non-existent dentils on both obverse and reverse. Your coin is a perfect example of the characteristic. Coin A, OYOH, exhibits the typical dentil appearance of all the other ND issues of 1838-40. While both of your coins are representative of the "type", the two of them represent to my eye a major variance in the appearance of the type. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to get both coins for my type set but if I already had both of them, I'd keep them both.
