what is the best date in the SLQ serias that is cheap in ms 63-66? also considering sharpness of strike
1917 type 1 will have the strongest details. Not to mention a bare-breasted Liberty to boot! After 1917, finding a strongly struck shield on a coin that is attractive is extremely difficult (I've been looking for a low MS example for two years wthout success), and it always struck me as ridiculous to pay the FH price if the shield isn't even fully struck (even if the die doesn't have the detail, as many didn't). Here's my 1917-D 64 FH
I'm looking at bidding on one these things now, but the costs is already steep. Why is this coin so silver? When you think about it, the attempted design on the SQL is INSANE for a coin. Ruben
I agree with you on that Ruben. I've always thought the SLQ ranked up there with the Buffalo nickel for terrible design. What really sucks is both are cool coins. Jako lipo . I'd go with a 1917 type 1 as you can easily find a full head example and a nekkid lady quarter at the same time. clembo
The coin is so silver because it was dipped. Practically no way it is natural like that. FWIW, it now lives in a Dansco 7070 and is retoning nicely. Next time I bring the set home, I'll try and take a new picture of it...Mike
Its a great design, just sucks for a coin because of the wear and reproducibility. Your right though, it is similar to a buffalo nickel, even worse. Ruben
Nice coin leadfoot. I have a 1917 P FH in 63 but it has a contact mark in the panel on the right of Lady Liberty, would love to have yours. I am doing a type set now and have the same question, for a type two in the later years what is an under-rated or sleeper coin in 63 grade. Seams there are a ton of 26D's on the market, any good?
Depending upon budget a 26-D might fit the bill but I'd also look at the 27-D. Less than a million minted.
I'm no expert on SLQs but feel the 27-D is under rated as I felt the 27-S was. Was right on the 27-S. As for the 30-S, my only BU SLQ is a 30-S. Not an extraordinary strike but not horrible. I guess it's just a matter of digging for the coin that suits you. I'd still lean toward the 17 Type 1 for a good strike.
I've got to agree. The type I was a lousy design. I've got one...just one, and it has absolutely no date on it. Really ticks me off. I even tried to view it under my QX5, but no dice. I've got a couple of Buffalo nickels of similar ilk.
