My Julius Caesar came today, so I now have 10 of the 12 Caesar portraits. It was one of the more affordable coins with a nice portrait. OCTAVIAN & DIVUS JULIUS CAESAR AE heavy dupondius. Struck in GAUL, at Colonia Viennensis, circa 36 BC. IMP CAESAR (written above and below portraits) IMP DIVI F DIVI IVLI, (written counterclockwise along edge). Bare heads of Julius Caesar and Octavian back to back (Caesar on left). Reverse - Prow of galley with pyramidal superstructure right. RPC I 517. 29x17mm, 9.6g. Rare. "Halved, presumably for change as was the custom." I did has this one, but not a portrait and it's a fouree. Julius Caesar Denarius (fouree) . 46-45 BC, Spanish mint. Diademed head of Venus right, Cupid on her shoulder / CAESAR below Gallia & Gaulish captive seated beneath trophy of Gallic arms. Syd 1014, Crawford 468/1, RSC 13. Please share some coins of JC.
Niiiice @randygeki ! Good portrait, and you are NAILING the Seutonius Twelve Caesar series! Hey being a HALF-Dupondius... You are not doing a half-as job, rather a FULL AS !
Very cool pick-up!! My only JC is that denarius I posted on another thread----Augustus with the youthful portrait of JC...which unfortunately doesn't seem to resemble him even when he was alive and young LOL
It is a nice portrait, and probably as big as those on the denarius, good pick up randygeki, I only have two JC, never went after the imperial silver issues as to expensive, got a Macedon AE minted about 28 BC and his non-portrait Dupondius minted lifetime 45 BC.
Forgot one AUGUSTUS (OCTAVIAN) AE Dupondius OBVERSE: CAESAR DIVI F, bare head of Octavian right REVERSE: DIVOS IVLIVS, wreathed head of Julius Caesar right Gallic or Italian mint 38 BC 30mm; 17.90 g CR535/v1, RPC620v
Not JC's PORTRAIT per se, but a well known JC as he was crossing the Rubicon... "IACTA ALEA EST!" RR Caesar AR Denarius 49 BCE Traveling Mint Elephant-Pontificates Sear 1399 Craw 443/1
Only Caesar I've got. Not in the best of shape but it's a Caesar. One of these days I'll grab a portrait example. Nice coins all!
Wow geki, that's some fancy OP-stuff ... sadly, I'm not a high-flyer with those Playboy JC examples (I'm more of an Augustus man) => hey, congrats again on nailin' that new addition!! (it looks good on you)
@randygeki it's for sure a great idea for a Julius Caesar portrait to get that Vienna dupondius, be it half or plain, as long has you get The Man's portrait : very good score on a rare denomination (sadly I don't have any of those) As we pile on (once again) his coinage, here are mine Julius Caesar, Denarius minted in Italy, c.49 BC CAESAR, elephant walking rigth, trampling on snake No legend, Simpulum, sprinkler, axe and apex 4.05 gr Ref : HCRI # 9, RCV #1399, Cohen #49 Julius Caesar, Denarius minted in North Africa c.47-46 BC No legend, Diademed head of Venus right CAESAR, Aeneas left, bearing Anchises on his shoulder 3.91 gr Ref : HCRI # 55, RCV #1402, Cohen #12 Julius Caesar, Denarius minted in North Africa in 46 BC COS TERT / DICT ITER, head of Ceres right AVGVR / PONT MAX, simpulum, sprinkler, capis and lituum, D in right field 3,81 gr Ref : HCRI # 57, RCV # 1403/1, RSC # 4a, Cohen # 4 Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, Denarius minted in 43 BC M ANTO IMP RPC, Head of Mark Antony right, lituus behind him CAESAR DIC, Head of Caesar right, jug behind him 3.76 gr Ref : HCRI # 123, RCV #1465, Cohen #3 Q
