Hello to all! This is my 1st post. I started CRH about 1 year ago and I would like advice and opinions on this coin I found last night.
It's a nicely toned cent with a grease filled die on the reverse in the word "STATES". A great find. welcome to CT!
First, welcome to the neighborhood! I thought cotton candy was pink! I don't think the toning on this particular coin is anything special. Personally, I think it's only worth face value. Chris
Is it a copper or zinc variety? Value 0.01 cent but I personally would throw in a tube marked UNC toned for future evaluation.
It is zinc, 2.5 grams. And to a previous REPLY post: Cotton candy can be tinted any pastel color or a combination of colors.
I've seen lots of weak STATES on cents and I don't think it's a filled die. The base of Lincoln's portrait is the highest relief on the obv. and it's directly opposite the STATES on the rev. A lot of metal has to flow into this area to fill it in. If the pressing pressures aren't set up correctly (low to increase die life?), you end up with a weak strike. The shoulder doesn't have a lot of detail but it's probably weakly struck as well. At least that's my theory.
I think the toning is heat related, but it's really hard to tell natural toning from other sources on modern copper, so I can't say for certain. Copper is a very reactive element and all kinds of toning can occur, both naturally and artificially. "Better Living Through Chemistry"
Hey paddy & @CREATIVECRHUNTER .........I haven't been to an amusement park since about 1960, and I'll give you one guess which color was used for cotton candy. Chris
