They have that "Chinese style" look to them. What say you? http://www.ebay.com/itm/201802399656?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
No other coins for sale from that seller... lots of "vintage" items... maybe they found it at a yard sale or pawn shop... 2nd coin: "M" in "UNUM" looks off... 3rd coin: is that a die crack on the reverse?
I don't like the look of them for sure. I'm not sure, though, that this seller would know the difference himself.
Date positions tell the tale at a glance. All but the 1880 show a right of "normal" or "far" date. From 78-83 all date positions were the same. That's why we call all dates where the left side of the bottom crossbar of the 1 is above the half way point of the second denticle from the neck point "normal"
The 1's on the 1881 are wrong, and the ear on that '80 is way too worn for that level of wear. I vote fakes
The first two digits of the date were hubbed, and the second pair of digits occasionally has differences. All the same, Cascade's right and the first and third coins are therefore immediately identified as fake without needing any other evidence. The third - along with the (characteristic of a fake) grainy weakness at the centers - is guilty by association.
I do not know. But I thought this would be a good exercise for those of us who buy online and don't often have that information.
The point which bothers me the most is that these are not seen by all as intuitively fake. They're poster children for the most common methodology; I knew they were fakes the moment I saw them and then had to dig for specific evidence to point out. The dates on the 1881 and 1883 are absolutely unequivocal proof. As far as I'm concerned, the weakness from the breast up through and including "od_we_t" is equally unequivocal; that was my "eureka moment" for these.
Rogh Right on, but if these coins were mixed in with a bunch of Morgans that someone was selling as "junk" lot for $17-20/piece, it would be hard to notice. If you don't see these in person and get to weight and measure, it would be tough to sift out right off the bat. A Youtube channel called Silverhound talks about some very high level counterfeits.
Anyone report this Ebay post? I personally don't know enough to pick out a real from a fake. I have purchased a couple of Morgan's from Ebay. I now need to get them verified.
an There are some people who have been taken advantage of China ripoffs and Ebay always recommends buying either graded coins or coins from a reputable seller. This buyer noticed something fishy when his coins were being sent to him from China! lol, what a nightmare! http://www.ebay.com/gds/FAKE-MORGAN-DOLLARS-/10000000001220610/g.html Make sure you buy through Paypal and use credit card to avoid fraud like this.
