Lincoln's head wouldn't be raised but recessed, or so my ever-failing mind tells me after trying to picture this all, right? Who knew something that should be so simple.... Haha That said, I can only assume lighting is the issue, not so much because it fits, but because the design appears to match perfectly what one would expect from such a clash. If said anomaly turned out to be anything else, it's one hell of a coincidence. Maybe we do need an overlay after all.
Not all clashes, possibly due to rotation, misalignment, etc will perfectly match a generic overlay. We need one using the OP coin, but I'm too lazy to do it.
Rick, you're placing the sun on a horizontal plane when it should be a vertical plane. (Put a desk clock on a table facing you and tell me where 10 or 11 o'clock is.) Chris
Thanks for all the replies. Had to head out for a little while. Here is the front as paddyman98 ask for earlier. Hope this helps.
Its a clash, look at where the top of old Abes head crosses past the middle bar of the E The overlay works better when you flip it the right direction
The big question then is it worth paying to have it slabbed or just sell it as is? Not sure how much it would cost to have a coin slabbed compared to what it's value is. Thanks for everyones help with this. I am learning a lot already.
I've seen a few of these over the years and always considered it a clashed die. Occasionally you can even see remnants of Liberty between the pillars in the Lincoln Memorial.
A better bet and a whole lot less expensive would be to submit this to any of the attributers at www.maddieclashes.com. $3.00 for attribution fee plus return postage. If you can post to them some nice pictures you could also save these fees, but either way you would know for sure and possibly lay claim to a new variety (discovery). Both Mike Diamond & Robert Neff are qualified to do this through this site.
Maybe someone here could tell you how to copy and paste a link of your thread & photo here into your email to them. Anyone here willing to help? I'm still not good enough at this to give this advice or even if it's possible. Be patient though, these guys probably all have a regular job in addition to their hobby interests.
