Please guess the grade of the 1978 Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 4 different things: the numerical grade, 5FS or Not FS, the + designation, and the * designation. As always, comments welcome, and please remember to vote in the poll.
MS 66 5FS ...the area under the first column appears to be questionable (break in the steps) but I believe something like that generally is acceptable and will get the FS....as far as the grade, it has clean fields and appears to have solid luster-enough for a 66 grade
Unless they changed the rule, it has to be MS to get the FS designation. If it is MS there is A LOT of chatter on the cheek, and 2 gouges on the obv rim at 11 o'clock. MS 62 or 63. The reverse is a little cleaner but there are still 4 very discernible nicks on Monticello. I like the steps and the slight break on the left side doesn't bother me. 5FS.
Too much 'chatter' on the face of Jefferson for anything higher than '65. Well struck and comely, especially for a coin of that era. I'm at'65 FS.....
I don’t see any chatter, if you mean it was abraded by another coin. I do see some remaining planchet roughness that the strike did not obliterate. There is usually more than this on most Jeff’s, plus there is usually roughness on the jacket collar and shoulder. Basically, I think this is unusually well struck, considering how hard a metal nickel is. Reverse detail is also excellent, showing the spindles in the balustrade along the roof. Windows are clear and sharp. I can’t quite grant an FS designation. The mark at upper left does bridge the step. (I have mentioned before that I think taking away FS because of a post-strike contact just seems petty.) The roughness along the bottom also bridges in a few places. All in all, a very nice coin, so I went with MS66+.
