Hello I wonder if anyone can offer me some guidance on this coin. I found it my dad's old coin collection. I believe it to be a replica coin not holding much value, but can someone here verify that for me? You can see the word "copy" stamped on the face of the coin. I think I read that there are very very few originals of this coin known to be in circulation and that's one way to spot a fraud. HAHA. But what I'm wondering is this...if this is a replica as I suspect, do we know about them as collectible pieces themselves? When were they made. Why were they made? Do they hold any value? Any b/g that you know of, would be appreciated. Thank you.
Well, the fact that it's stamped COPY indicates it is a modern replica because only modern law required that identification. So, it wouldn't have any real street value, as might be possible for a contemporary counterfeit.
Crude cast replicas like this are never going to be collectible. If a talented engraver were to do a high quality, die struck replica, then that might be worth a few dollars.
Cool, guys. Thanks so much. I really appreciate the help I have received on this forum. Very good. Have a great day, boys!
It would be difficult to estimate a value of real example, since there has been only one original known to exist for the last hundred and fifty years. There are, however, a rather large number of counterfeits extant - you can buy them brand-new today - so it is very likely that yours isn't authentic. https://coins.ha.com/itm/colonials/...hitman-8385-unique-vf35-ngc-cac/a/1216-5672.s
Replica coins are not always marked as such, many were made before the law requiring them to be marked. Post a picture if you can, but there is virtually no chance of it being genuine.
OK, that one is not a Janus copper copy, it is a New Hampshire copper copy. No real value, they have been available for years at souvenir shops and the like for a couple dollars or so.
