Hello all! I have a new one for you. It's a 1964 Kennedy half with an "incomplete planchet" or clip as some call it. The normal weight is 12.50 grams. Can you guess how much it weighs now and how much did it lose? Thanks for playing! Bragging rights given for the correct answer later in our show here. Here is my latest coin as well. Thanks again!
Sal, it’s a pretty small chaw bite outta that thar cuss, so I’m a gonna say…. …it lost .07 gram so it’s weight should be 12.43 grams. ‘course it could have been struck on a thick or thin planchet so only you will know. Don’t keep us in suspense! We gotta know!…Spark
I'm guessing that if we could have seen the blank prior to upsetting and striking, we would've seen a missing chunk that looked larger. Upsetting redistributes things a little bit (see Blakesley effect), and striking mashes more metal into the void. Very cool exercise. Thanks for the post!
Indeed, a very cool, fun exercise. Kudos! @SensibleSal66 (So I was right. It was struck on a thin planchet!…(wink wink)…
