Ok in the long run I might regret this purchase, but I don't think I will.. even if it turns out to be "cleaned" I'm pretty sure I can recover my investment on these 2 pretty morgans one called "circulated" one called "uncirculated" Auction won for under 200.... The morgans? 78cc and 03s Watcha think of these
I don't think the 1878-CC is genuine. For starters, it's got blobby letters and stars on the obverse, and it has that fake-patina look that's still common on fakes. The 1903-S has a different look, but I'm suspicious of it based on the company it's keeping. Edit to add: I know what that 1903-S was tickling in my memory. The pawn shop I used to frequent once had a bunch of 1901 Morgans newly displayed - five or six of them, I think, all glistening with luster. I asked for a closer look, mainly to check the mint marks. Not a mint mark on the bunch. Now, an uncirculated 1901-P Morgan is a strong four-figure coin, and these were remarkably free of bag marks. A gem 1901-P is a six-figure coin. Five or six gem 1901-P Morgans would be... improbable. I called this to the shop's attention. I don't remember exactly how it shook out, but I think that either we found they were attracted to a magnet, or they were way light. I expect the store ate them; I can't imagine they were able to go back on whoever sold or pawned the things. In your case, if it turns out I'm right, I hope you got them from eBay or someplace with comparable buyer protection. Actually, I hope I'm wrong and you're a big winner on this pair -- but I'm not optimistic.
I agree with the sentiment that they do not appear genuine from these pictures. I would check the weights, VAMs, and magnet test them. Something just seems off...for having practically no marks in the fields the details on them are very mushy / soft. Do you have them in hand to take better pictures? That might help clear the air a bit. Hopefully they're genuine and you got a great deal, or at least returnable to where you got them from. Or dispute the charge on your cc for it? Best wishes and good luck!
Was this a test? The eye lids look heavy on that 78-CC. She looks drunk. The 78-CC would wholesale for more than $200 by itself so you wouldn't be able to purchase a real one for $200. A real 03-S in MS61 would wholesale for $6k. Either mark them and save them as learning tools or send back for a refund.
I recall that the gash in the eagle's breast on the 1878-CC is a marker for a whole family of CC counterfeits, and yeah, even in AU that 1903-S is a four figure coin. If it's too good to be true, it usually is. Hope you can get a refund.
The 1903-S reminds me of this fake Peace Dollar I have. Many counterfeits have uneven or malformed rims.
