I really do like the variety of 'reverse' images found on roman coins. To illustrate my point, here are a variety of 'reverse' images from some of my Gallienus coins. (Please post your favorite 'reverse' image.) GALLIENUS-Victory RIC Vi. Siscia 586 GALLIENUS-Mars RIC Vi. Rome 236b GALLIENUS-Stag RIC Vi. Rome 179 GALLIENUS-Centaur RIC Vi. Nice collection you got there Topcat ! Love The centaur and the deer , Here's my favourite Gallienus , (its the only one I have)
I've wanted to collect his "zoo" types but here is what I have: Gallienus, AD 253-268 Billon Antoninianus, 2.84g, 12h; Rome mint, Obv.: GALLIENVS AVG; Radiate, cuirassed bust right. T in field
nice coins Tc, love that stag! only have 2 gallienus and both picked for the reverse, altho i would like to upgrade diana with a little sharper details... Gallienus, AE antoninianus. Rome, sole reign. 257-258 AD. IMP GALLIENVS AVG, radiate, cuirassed bust right / DIANA FELIX, Diana walking right, drawing bow and holding arrow, hound at foot. RIC V-1 Rome 174 var (bust type); Goebl 920L (Milan). 24.74mm 3.0g RIC V 174v Gallienus AR Antoninianus. Asian mint. GALLIENVS PF AVG, radiated cuirassed bust right / VIRTVS AVGVSTI, Hercules standing right holding lion's skin and leaning on club set on rock. Star in right field. Cohen 1321. RIC V 672
WOW @Topcat7 , COOL reverses: I like stag, hippocamp, gryphon, centaur... really cool. Mine are kinda dull... Gallienus: RI Gallienus 253-268 CE Ant Hercules RI Gallienus 253-268 CE Ant Milan mint Laetitia RI Gallienus 253-268 CE Ant Abundantia But, his WIFE has a cool reverse: (LOL, OOOPS... that could be taken all wrong!) RI Salonina wife of Gallienus 254-268 CE AE Ant 3.61g 20mm Rome mint 267-268 CE crescent Deer Walking delta RIC 15.jpg
Great 'reverses' all. I did not know that Hercules was so popular - and I don't have one, (yet). Please keep them coming.
here's a galleinus i haven't posted with a reverse i didn't know about before i picked the coin up... this coin was my pocked piece for a while, and i mistakenly took it with me on a kayak trip recently. i'll just say this coin was in the river...while in my pocket.
My most interesting reverse type of his is this FECVNDITAS one because that's a reverse type only used by Empresses (with this exception).
I have 2 Gallienus coins, The Antelope coin on the left is kept behind plastic to preserve its mint state condition.
Gallienus had some wonderful types. It's really a shame that the mint work was so shoddy during his time. @Topcat7-- nice assortment! I'd love to get a hippocamp reverse @Severus Alexander-- Wow! That's one of the finest Gallienus coins I've seen! My only purposefully purchased Gallienus imperial: Gallienus CE 260-268 Antoninianus, Rome mint Obv: GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right Rev: LIBERO P CONS AVG, striped tigress standing left; B in exergue Ref: RIC V 230 (Sole reign)
Fun! I love these grotty Gallienus coins. An old favorite recently rephotographed. I can't say it improved its looks . Secret Santa's present to me last year. Double Gallienus bonus... that's him on the reverse. DEO MARTI, Mars in a Temple reverse. PAX FVNDATA, which loosely translates to 'Peace is Fun (but not for my captives)'. Not much of a (Virtus) reverse... I apologize for including this, but I really like the portrait. Hercules reverse, in a different pose from the examples above.
Cool OP-examples, Topcat ... Hmmm, my two favourite Gallienus examples are probably these babies ... Gallienus, Pamphylia, Side AE 11 Assarion Gallienus with c/m & Athena holding spear and (thunderbolt), with sweet pomegranate left Gallienus, AE Tetradrachm (Alexandria) Gallienus & Eagle with wreath (very cool) ... it's a fricken toss-up which one I prefer ... => they're both total winners!!
Not sure if I am seeing a head rather than a money bag, but I see what your saying. Is that a face? Not sure that Mercury carries heads around though?
It's indeed a bag o' money. The marsupium, or purse, symbolises Mercury's function as god of commerce, patron of shopkeepers and merchants. Very nice coin, btw!
Here is a bull reverse that came yesterday: SOLI CONS AVG, XI in exergue 20-18 mm. 2.37 grams. RIC 285, page 156. Cunetio 1404 (19 pieces have this bull type among 2546 pieces in the hoard that are from the zoo "sixth series" issue. 16 are exactly this type and 3 are minor variants.)
