I'm thinking about buying this as a gift. What are your thoughts about it's condition? And what is it worth? Also if someone could provide a online reference link that would be great!
Looks like a provincial bronze of Caracalla? Not my area of expertise, but the designs look soft, so not sure if it is genuine. A worn coin would have the legends more worn in my opinion. Nice patina though, but this can always be applied. I could be wrong though, as provincials aren't my focus.
Here's the eBay listing of this coin with the description-- Caracalla 198-217 AD Thrace, Augusta Traiana AE Provincial Obverse: AVT K M AVPH ANTΩNEINOC; Laureate head right Reverse: AVΓOVCTHC TPAIANHC; Caracalla standing right, with foot set on bound captive, holding reversed spear and parazonium Size: 23 mm, 15.4 grams Reference: Mouchmov 3058 and here is a similar example with a C in the exergue
It's green because it's been in the ground and has a patina. Thracian provincials are well-known for having rich green patinas (as well as 'blue' patinas). I would stick to a dealer who is on vcoins or ma-shops. Victor is one such dealer. I was very satistfied with my purchase.
It's an attractive provincial. Nice patina. What's it worth? I dunno, but that price in the screenshot doesn't seem crazy to me. Especially if you could get it for a little less via Best Offer. Generally I'd agree with this advice, and stick to VCoins or MA-Shops for ancient coin purchases, but I see nothing wrong with an occasional eBay pickup.
