After reading the history of the Broken Sword how could I not?! But how he acquired the die, leaves room for suspicion. Out of all people in the world, this guy stumbles upon it at a garage sell?.. None the less, this is literally history being made I would of bought a hundred if I could of.

 

I think someone found a Picasso at a garage sale once....luck does happen, but not for you or me. I can understand the skepticism, but the bottom line is, he found the bronze.

It was an eBay auction from a picker type of guy who found it at a flea market or garage sale etc thinking it was a wall plaque or something. Dan was just in the right place at the right time so to speak browsing eBay and he pounced without knowing exactly what it was until he got it and inspected it and ran tests and researched it. For him to be the one to find it, with what he does, was nothing short of serendipity!

 

Oh nice! According to this guy the cast sold for $500. Wow, what an amazing buy...

From what I read, he originally bought it for $500 by offering that to the seller before the auction ran it's course. Another bidder then emailed the seller, saying he would have paid close to $8,000 I believe, so the guy message Dan saying he wanted it back because he sold it too cheap. I think Dan then paid him close to the other guy's offer to make up for it, which he didn't have to do. Don't quote me on the exact numbers, but I think it was close to this.

 

Yup, I read the entire thread, bunch of fighting about a book too lol. The other guy offered him $6000. Id reckon it would be worth way more then that though. Dan may have gave him a couple grand more. I might have too just to be nice.

 

This is basically correct.
I paid $500 initially, plus $125 for over-night express shipping.
Then later I sent another $3,500 (although there was no obligation to do so).

 

That thread on the other forum was started on Dec 19th, 2016... the eBay auction ended early on Dec 1st, 2016... I got my overstrike yesterday... that's pretty impressive turnaround time @dcarr, I must say.

 

Well yes, I am looking at ways to improve my engraving process.
But the "second batch" will be a different product four years from now for the 100th anniversary of the first Peace Dollars.

 

Well you sure are a nice guy for doing that! Do you plan on keeping the cast forever? After you get done making your coins that thing needs to be in the Smithsonian!

 

Can somebody explain to my what clashed means and why its like that? I'm wondering why you would buy that Morgan over the proof like one he also sells.

Typically they are just neat and don't add a premium until you get letter transfer. And even then they don't command big premiums for most series. Morgan's however are a different animal. We die variety guys known as VAMmers seek out clashed dies and the stronger the better. VAMs with strong die clashing and strong letter transfer can and do command very large premiums. There is nothing like Dans though in the Morgan series. A couple come close but if one was found with similar clashing as seen on these it would be a major deal and one heck of an expensive coin.

 

I really wish I would of heard of this guy when he made the 1964 Peace OS's. As history goes.. the Morgan was never chosen to be the new silver dollar back in 1964, which is why I'm debating on getting one of the Morgan 64 OS's. The only thing appealing obviously besides the coin itself its the 1964 only being minted. I just need that but the Peace!

 

Here are a couple that come close. The 1889 VAM 23a is a big deal and a major VAM with a very stuff price tag. The 1880p 32a has a similar look of dans reverse but without letter transfer and the 1891o v1a1 has a wicked clashed E like dans an it too commands a pretty penny...

Sad, cant believe anyone would want to sell a piece of history like this! Im waiting for my shipping conf as well. Would of bought more If I could of!
