Superman medal

Kind of surprised nobody was talking about this yet, so I guess I'll start the topic.

Any thoughts on the Superman medals? My thoughts are basically, love the design, no complaints there; but $135 feels like a lot to pay for about $40 worth of silver, even one with a great design.

Most of the debates I've seen anywhere about this medal are mostly from Superman/DC/comic fans rather than coin collectors. The few discussions I've seen from the latter are typically: 1. Why a fictional character like Superman; 2. Costs too much, or 3. I like it, I want it, I'll buy it. I agree with #2 kind of, yeah it's too much, but well... kind of par for the course with US Mint products these days, if I want it bad enough I'll begrudgingly fork out the dough. #1 well, American pop culture is part of American history too, so why not. #3 Yes I like it, I want it... but I'm still at "maybe" for whether I'll buy it.

Just wonder if anyone else had any thoughts on this. I'm seriously thinking about it, I'm not completely immune to FOMO lol... but the price feels a little steep and not sure if I want it bad enough to fork out that much for it. But I'm kind of still on the fence atm.

I think it'll sell well. I wish it were a coin, not a medal. Is it just me, or the mint seem to be making a lot more of those? I personally don't have an interest in the subject matter, but if I did, I would be hard pressed to shell out that kind of money. Possibly if it were a 2 ounce version.

I'll say, there are some medals recently I've really enjoyed the look of. I really like the American liberty medal this year with the sunflower on it. I've seen a video of the gold version and it's really nice.

Much like many of the medals of the past, you might be able to get one in the secondary in a year or two at a more favorable price.

There is indeed a 2 1/2 oz. silver version... it's $275 though for about $100 worth of silver.

There's also a gold version... $2710 for 1/2 an oz. of gold which is worth about $1700 right now (this is proportionately a better deal than the silver ones).

Because I'm just that much of a math nerd lol:
Premium above melt is about 250% for the 1 oz silver, about 180% for the 2.5 oz silver, and and about 60% for the 1/2 oz gold.

Bloody hate it. The US mint has finally turned the corner and rounded the bend regarding cartoonish depictions stamped on coins to collect a premium of excessive proportions in comparison to metals value. If I were a woman I'd cry rape........

The Mint should have better things to do than promote a movie. Maybe the absurd price includes that promotional consideration. Hmmm? Purchasing just encourages them to do this again.

Everyone's entitled to their opinions of course, but I can't bring myself to hate it (except for the price). Setting aside whether or not Superman should be on a coin, if he is going to be on one, this is the way to do it I think.

As for the price, I can't disagree, but that didn't start with this; they've been like that for years.

I'd rather they mint medals with speeding locomotives:D

I think trains have been on some US coins lol.

Anyway I was just genuinely curious about what people here thought about it; I have no stake in convincing people to think about it the way I do. So thanks all for that.

Honestly if this was like, $60 to $80, I wouldn't have to think about it; I'd already have bought it. But the premium above its intrinsic value is so high I have a hard time justifying the purchase to myself, unless it's something I really really wanted. And while I don't dislike Superman, I mean come on he's Superman, I also haven't spent years thinking "I just must absolutely own a picture of Superman on a piece of medal." I'm not against such a thing existing; I think it's about time that pop culture get its recognition for being a significant aspect of American history and culture, so why not recognize it. I don't want it to get to the point of being ridiculous, like some foreign coins that have pop culture characters that have nothing to do with their country, but Superman is definitely an iconic character in American pop culture. If I had to pick one fictional character to represent America, I'd probably pick him too. And the design is just really good. That being said... I've not lain awake at nights dreaming of owning a coin with Superman on it.

TLDR version: I want it, but I don't $135 want it. Maybe if it's possible to get it in the secondary market for a more reasonable price, I'll go for it. But I'm not paying $135 for $40 worth of silver, unless they put something on it I care more about than Superman. That being said... I am glad they're broadening their horizons and getting more creative with what they're putting on coins and medals, and I hope that results in more interesting designs, and eventually something I am more interested in being produced. I just hope they get more reasonable with their prices.

Even though the absolute price of the gold one is beyond what I can afford at the moment, the proportional premium is actually in line with what I would consider reasonable for something like this. If the silver ones only cost 60% more than their melt value, I'd get one right now.

Anyway, again, thanks for satisfying my curiosity about what people thought about it.

WAY to much money. The mint is producing these types of coins/medals for profit. I get it. But those premiums have turned me off all mint issues.

If that's the case, paying them to promote a movie to me is an insane concept. The mint should be getting money to promote it and pass the savings on to us, not the other way around.

I don't really see it as promoting a movie; the bill authorizing this was passed before the movie release date was announced. The fact the movie came out the same year was just a coincidence. They're releasing Batman and Wonder Woman medals this year too, and neither of those characters have movies coming out this year. Also, none of the Mint's advertising of the medal so much as even mentions the movie exists. I doubt anyone is going to see the movie because the medal exists. In fact it's far more likely someone would buy the medal because of the movie, than anyone would see the movie because of the medal. At any rate, Superman is already a popular character, or this medal wouldn't exist; the movie is already making plenty of money; Superman doesn't need any promotion. The Mint isn't making this medal to make the character popular; they're making this medal because the character already is (which is precisely the same reason the movie was made).
