I saw this on eBay tonight. Suspect coin is on the left, genuine on the right.

Not sure if fake or not but I wouldn’t be interested based on the color and the scratches.

I agree with "The Nut". It's damaged and not interesting. :yack:

Look at the background used to photograph the "suspect" coin.

    That background hides the scratches.

    Coin sort of blends in.

Yes it does and that adds to my dislike for it. That’s one that will never be in my collection. :)

Every single digit on the left coin looks bad.

The date is WAY too large to be real, as there are no date varieties known for 1870, and the serifs are wrong as well.

I'd give you $1 for it to put it in my 'Oddities' bin and sell for $2 at most.

...wouldn't that be treading on dangerous ground (selling a known counterfeit)?

Regardless of law I would never resell it if I had it as I wouldn't want it back into the population to dupe some other unsuspecting collector and possibly turn them away from the hobby.

That's why I'd put it in a flip and mark it as fake.

The whole area around IN GOD says fake to me, as well as the other stuff mentioned.

I agree - in fact, to me it looks like a small motto instead of a large. I'm pretty sure that the large motto was the one used from mid 1864 on, and then the 8 - that 8's bad serif is worth 1,000 words on its own.
