My guess would be exposure to acid so PMD in my opinion but I expect one of our error experts will chime in shortly
Even though there appears to be a part of the rim that is copper colored only with no silver or other coloring?
The best way to clear a concern like this is to look for all the ways this could happen up to the time it was struck. I can't think of any.
