Would you like to select a date? & Denomination? Or should we just guess?

I'm going to guess 1977S, but only because he listed his finds in a previous post.

Are you sure it's a PF 64-65? I've found over 50 Proofs in circulation and so far, I have only found 1 or 2 that I would give a PF60 or better. Virtually everyone has some sign of circulation that in my book knocks it down to AU58 or lower (although some would say PF58, not sure what the convention is on that).

ok, well i have absolutely no idea on how to grade, but it's definitely circulated. So maybe a 56 or 57 :) I'll post a picture if need be.

Don't take my comment wrong, it's very possible to find a 64-65 in circulation. I find MS64-65 1998D and 1997P all the time. I swear that the coins must be coming from Mint Sewn Bags to be that good looking when I get them.

Ok, rookie question here. How can you tell if a coin you pull out of circulation, with all the nicks and dings, was a proof strike?

because there's an S where the mint mark is. That means it came from the San Fransisco mint. So determining it most likely isn't a 64 or 65 since i don't know much about grading, can somebody give me a rough estimate of a lower grade proof 1977 half?

Just because a coin has an "S" mint mark does not mean it is a proof. I am not sure how you could tell easily if a well circulated coin is a proof, i am sure someone will be along soon how knows more about this.

ciculated proofs arn't really worth much and you would have a hard time selling it becuase nobody wants circulated proofs. if at most a circulated 1977S half would go for $1-$1.25, if you found someone to buy it.

the only non proof mintmarks are on 1968-1974 cents, 1968-1970 nickels, and on the sba dollar coins. those are for modern coins though.

I searched 5000 wheat cents and found a 1956 D/D rpm 1. It's worth about a dollar or two. However, I will never sell it. It's my precious.

I'm putting together a proof set of half dollars pulled entirely from circulation. My goal is 1964 to date. Although I did find a 1960 Franklin Proof, I don't expect to ever find the 1961, 1962, or 1963. I do think the 1964 and forward is feasible.

To date, I have found three 1964 Proofs (I found my third one this morning), and I have found 2 of the SMS Kennedy's (don't remember which 2 dates they were right now). As of last week, I was only 19 proofs shy of this goal. I have 10 more proofs I found in the past week, but don't recall if they are all duplicates at the moment.

I'm going to call it my Poor Man's Proof Set. The funny part is I bet that if I did list it on ebay, it would sell for more than if they all were fresh proofs not found in circulation.

Went through ten rolls of nickels yesterday and found some neat stuff, one of the rolls even had a '39, '44P, '47, and a couple of fifties in it.

Searched $100 in halves today from a bank I'm usually not too lucky with.

    7- 40%, 2- 1964 and... TADAAA! My first Franklin! (1952)

That dosn't sound believable, are you sure they are proofs?

Congrats on the Franklin. I'm lucky if my bank carries a dollar's worth of Kennedy's whenever I walk in.

Let me ask you this, how many boxes do you search per week?

You should try looking at each coin individually and not just the edges.

edit: upon re-reading this post, it sounds harsh. Don't take it the wrong way, I'm just making the suggestion; more boxes + looking at each coin's face equals more proofs, error coins, Not Released For Circulation, and silver will be found. I've found silver coins that show some copper or corrosion that can look like a clad from the edge. 1987, 2002-2007 cannot be distinguished from the edge at all. Some circulated proofs loose their pristine edge very quickly and don't always stand out in the roll.

See this thread for an example of a circulated proof that I found this week

Hamman88, I'm not sure if you search halves or not but finding proof halves for whatever reason is much easier than any other denomination. For example, today I went through $2,000 in halves and I found 4 proofs, which is nearly average for me. On the other hand, I've searched almost 500,000 cents in the past year and only found 2 proof coins.
