Hello All, I have a set of about 90 Hungarian denars from ca. 1500-1700. I have enjoyed the set but I haven’t added a new coin since 2017 I think. So I think it is time to move on. I’m uninterested in selling on EBay. However I’m not sure if: a) There is any market at all. b) How to access that market. c) How to price them. If anyone knows of a dealer that specializes in these or Hungary generally, please let me know. I’d be very grateful. Nick
Pick out 3 or 4 of the ones with clear dates, usually the 1530-1559, and donate them to @lordmarcovan monthly giveaways. Try selling on the BST forum here. I'll PM a dealer who might buy them. No guarantees.
I didn’t expect much to start so even this is a nice development. With that in mind, yes if you know someone that is great and feel free to PM me as needed. I could do BST but I see lots of stuff that sits there for a long time which is one thing I very much want to avoid.
@nicholasz219 If you go the BST route for the nice ones with good strikes and full readable dates $20-$25 each is a fair price. Lesser pieces $10-$15 ea. Surprisingly post 1550 and later are usually harder to find nice.
There is absolutely a market for them, but the main issue is that they are extremely common. I've seen bags of 500 & 1000 pieces being offered and most of the coins are AU/UNC. You don't mention what condition yours are in. If they are under XF and/or cleaned/damaged, your best bet is probably a single lot on eBay. If you don't want to do the selling, there are many people who will do it for you and take a commission. If they are AU+ there is a decent market for them. Dealers will buy them, but you're probably looking at maybe $10 each for a problem free, readable date, AU+ example.
Thanks for the responses everyone. I have a solid run of years and I would say XF+ is about right. I think I am probably undergrading them but I also wouldn’t want to oversell the condition and make someone really unhappy. I can think of one or two clunkers but those are the exceptions. I bought the vast majority of them from Andy years ago but then ran into the problem of the more scarce pieces and then it just lay there.
Looking at them in hand, I would correct that description to VF as a baseline with some coins certainly better. I just don't want to oversell the grades when I do not mean to. I'm still hopeful to sell most of these to one seller. I could do a BST post but I have a feeling most of everyone who is interested is here as it is.
